My favorite child movie Beauty and the Beast

My favorite child movie I rewatched was Beauty and the Beast. Growing up I can’t help but remember laying in my princes themed room. Under my warm pink fuzzy blanket singing along with all the songs throughout the movie. One thing I would always take away from watching this movie was dare to be different. I find standing out because you’re not like everyone else isn’t a bad thing. It means you’re an individual. Embrace what makes you different, because it’s also what makes you special.

Classical version vs the 2017 version

When I was faced with the task of writing with paper. I was shocked to learn the different messages that Disney has put out form watching Mickey Mouse Monopoly. With that being said I decided to watch the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast. Hoping that there wouldn’t be that many negative messages.With that being said I decided to watch the newest version.

The Beauty and the Beast begins in the hidden heart of France. Where a handsome young prince lived in a beautiful castle. Although he had everything his heart desired the prince was selfish and unkind. One night during a party a unexpected intruder arrived at the castle, seeking shelter from the bitter storm. As a gift she offered the prince a single rose. When the prince seen how ugly she was he turn her away. She warned him not to be deceived by appearances. Beauty is found within. The prince didn’t care enough to listen.

Suddenly the old woman became beautiful and turned prince into a ugly beast. As punishment the beautiful lady placed a powerful spell on the prince, the castle, and all who live there. The prince and his servants was soon forgotten by the world. If the prince could learn to love another before all the rose petals had falling off the rose, the spell would be broken. If not, he would remain a ugly beast for all time.

Soon following we are brought to a small village. Here is where we meet Belle and her Single father. Her father sets off for a small trip on his horse. That didn’t go as planned. They got lost, ran into a pack of wolves, and landed at the castle. The beast was unhappy and held the father captive. Phillippe, the horse galloped back to the village, to inform Belle on what had happen to her father. With this in mind, she instantly jumped on the horse. On her journey to find her father. When Belle found her father in the castle, she came to the conclusion that she would switch spots with her father because she was the reason why he was locked away.

Gaston’s character

The first character that may impression on me is Gaston. Gaston is a handsome, well dressed soldier with a unpleasant attitude. In his first interaction with Belle, he makes fun of her dad and criticizes her for reading. He even admits he only wants Belle because she’s the hottest girl in village. Then he carries along with stating “It’s the ones that play hard to get that are always the sweetest prey. That’s what makes belle so appealing she hasn’t made a fool of herself just to gain my favor. (Gaston)” I’m not even thirty minutes in watching and already I see many red flags. For starter Belle is being made fun of because she likes to read. I am afraid this is just showing young children to not embrace what they like or even be proud of their smartness and their ability to want to learn. Secondly, when Gaston is proudly making it clear he only want Belle because she’s the hottest girl in village. Is just goes to show that men only want females for what they look like. I believe it’s safe to say this is why young girls think they need to worry so much about their outward appearance.

I believe it’s safe to say the film portrays his character with traditional stereotypical masculine traits. For example Gaston is a Caucasian male that is self confident, and very aggressive. The first time I notice captain Gaston had more self-confidence than normal was then he is looking in the mirror running his fingers through his hair, admiring himself “ You are the most wildest, most gorgeous thing I ever seen. No one deserves you. But, at least, I know our children will be beautiful.(Gaston)”. My next thing that was brought to my attention that did not sit right with me was when Gaston very aggressive. He begins to pull on Belle’s dress and got extremely close to her. After she made it extremely clear she didn’t want to talk to her. “Gaston we can never make each other happy. No one can change that much. Oh Belle. Do you know what happens to spinsters in this village after their fathers die? They beg for scraps, like poor Agathe. This is our world Belle. For simple folk like us, it doesn’t get any better. I might be a fram girl. But I am not simple… and I will never marry you,Gaston. I am sorry. (17:00 – 17:34)” In this scene it’s clear to see that her personal space is being violated. As Belle tries to back away from him and go into her house Gaston begins to pry the door open with his foot and hands insisting he is what she needs in life to be truly happy. This is showing young children at home watching that you will always need a partner to take care of you and make you feel happy. Although Belle is ready with the life she lives with her father.

Belle’s and other female characters

The we have Belle. She is stubborn young woman, determined to do more with her life than to simply end up in a marriage where her duty is strictly housework.

When one of the local villagers notice Belle teaching a little girl to read the book, they couldn’t help but say. “What on earth are you doing? Teaching another girl to read? Isn’t one enough? We have to do something.

In most Disney films leading up to The Beauty and the Beast, the female characters were not portrayed as having power or dignity. Most of their dreams, ambitions, include a man. The Beauty and the Beast show young viewers, particularly girls, the importance of having your own ambitions and that these dreams are not limited by gender.

One question I cant help to find the answer to is Where’s Belle’s mom? She’s never mentioned, nor does anyone ask where she is. In almost every Disney movie there is always a single parent raising a kid by themselves. What message is this send to the youth? It’s not ok to be raised by two parents?
