On June 5, 2018, director Gary Ross released a movie called, Ocean’s 8 containing many strong female leads from different ethnicities. In Ocean’s 8, the leading female plays a role as Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), who is released from prison with not a dime to her name. As she takes her first steps out in the streets of New York City, she finessed her way through a make-up store and was able to steal a luxury hotel room. From this point on, this gave the audience to know this character well and shows Debbie Ocean’s true colors.

Debbie Ocean was in prison for five years, serving a sentence for fraud (which resulted from her former partner turning all the evidence on her to save himself). Through those years, she planned a heist to steal the most expensive necklace hosted at the Met Gala after her parole from prison. Ocean’s 8 contained a more glamorous, fashionable feel and this movie also showed how powerful women can be.

After settling in, she started to get to work on her plan and contacted her best friend, Lou (Cate Blanchett). After persuading her and explaining her plan, Lou was in and agreed to go along with it, and together they made a team. Debbie Ocean and Lou contacted Tammy (Sarah Paulson), Nine Ball (Rihanna), Constance (Awkwafina), Rose Weil (Helen Bonham Carter), Amita (Mindy Kaling), and later on Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) as part of their plan because they all had a special skill that was needed for the heist.

Each character had a specific skill and each skill defined their character. Debbie wasted no time putting a group together with females who are hackers, thieves, and hustlers. Debbie and her team had outlined a plot to filter through the most astonishing New York party, the Met Gala, that occurs each year. This year was critical because it held a necklace, the Toussaint, that is to be made from $150 million worth of pure diamonds. As the big day comes, the ladies were all ready to go with the plan they have been preparing ever since Debbie was released from prison.

Each character had a specific job for these women to be able to steal this $150 million necklace, so each job had to be done precisely and accurately. Tammy (Sarah Paulson) was an old friend of Debbie’s, which is one of the reasons why she is a part of this heist. Tammy took a job at Vogue, this gave her an advantage for the group because it gave them inside access to the Met Gala planning. Rose Weil (Helen Bonham Carter) part of the whole heist was to create a stunning dress for Daphne Kluger for the Met Gala, which is the person who was set to wear the Toussaint. She also convinced the Cartier to let the diamonds outside of the vault scan, so it made it possible for the girls to make a replica. Nine Ball (Rihanna) was a pro with computers and hacking into security systems. Constance (Awkwafina) is excellent at being a thief, so her job was to remove the necklace from Daphne Kluger when she was distracted. Amita (Mindy Kaling) then received the necklace from Constance, her job was to detach the necklace into even smaller pieces. Each cast member showed an elegant look after the Met Gala heist because their dresses represented their character.

After knowing that Debbie was sentenced to five years in prison because her old lover pushed all of the evidence on her to save himself, you would think that when she was released from prison her first move was to get revenge on her ex-lover. Well, you are right! The heist at the Met Gala was just part of her plan and the other part was to get revenge. Ocean’s 8 did an incredible job at showing how women can be powerful and how women can be capable of accomplishing what they dream of doing. In the movie, Debbie was giving her crew a pep talk before the whole went down she said, “Don’t do this for me. Don’t do this for you. Somewhere out an 8-year-old girl is lying in bed dreaming of being a criminal. Let’s do this for her” (Ocean’s 8). At first, I was confused when Debbie said this but as I said it over and over again, she did not mean literally a little girl wanted to be a criminal but that little girl could do whatever she dreamed of and that nothing could stop her from achieving in what she believed in. Ocean’s 8 also showed a very diverse cast which is one of the reasons this movie intrigued me. Each character is from a different ethnicity but their ethnicity did not define their character.

Debbie Ocean created a master plan during her time in prison for one of the biggest heists in history but to also get revenge on her ex-lover. Debbie and her best friend Lou created an incredible team to accomplish Debbie’s plan. This team had powerful women who each played an important role based on their skills and not only that, Ocean’s 8 showed a diverse group. This showed how that women are capable of anything they put their minds toward and how their ethnicity does not define their character.
