How are you? I’m alright. It feels like I left Russia two years ago even though it’s been two months. It’s been quite an interesting time here in America, it is nothing like back home in Russia. Right now we found a good home in New York City we are staying in a house that people here call a tenant. It’s very small and crowded but much lovelier than most other homes. The neighborhood where we live is nice.

I’ve made new friends with the neighbors’ children. They were both from Russia as well. Their names are Tatiana and Sasha. They are very kind and I enjoy playing with them when I’m not working. I cannot wait for you to come to America and meet them. You will like them and become friends with their parents as well. But the only bad thing about our neighborhood is that there is a group of bullies who always come by and steal our toys we play our games with.

In America, there are a few people that are mean to us because we’re Russian. Not just us though, but other people which came from different places. Dad has been working really hard at an industrial factory, he earns 6 dollars a week, I’ve gotten a job as a maid as well and make 4 dollars a week. Every week we save 2 dollars for you to come to America. I can’t wait for you to come, I know that you will absolutely love America! We know that it’s very hard for you back in Russia due to the infertile land.

That’s why we had to move here to America, we sold all our animals and had barely any crops to sell and live off of.

I miss everyone we had to leave behind in Russia. I am very glad that I decided to come to America though. The trip is very expensive if we all go together so we have to save up money for you to come here to America. the boat towards America is very unpleasant, its extremely crowded, and they throw the dead overboard! It’s very disturbing, and a lot of people get sick. At night the friends and family of the dead weep so it’s very hard to sleep.

You will know you’re almost on American soil when you pass a very big statue of a woman raising a torch on one hand and holding a book on the other hand. I overheard people calling it the Statue of Liberty. A man told me it represents the freedom of America. When I stepped off the boat, I saw the flag of America on a place called Ellis Island. It is red, white and blue and has shapes of stars and stripes all over the flag! Then I saw Papa waiting under the flag for me and Borya. At Ellis Island we were treated fairly, it’s even more crowded there than on the boat, but we managed to get out of the receiving station and go to our tenement.

Even though we’re free in America its very hard because we are different. In public places, people would stare at me because I am Russian while they are not. That’s why Papa always says to be nice when you are in front of people. Regardless, I like America! There are some things that could be improved, but it is better than Russia. In America, you can meet new people, especially that have different color skin. I cannot wait for you to come to America. It is way better than our old country. I Love and miss you.
