Nine years ago, I, Richard Thompson aka Tyrone, now 51, retired from the Army in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and was excited about all the new activities this location afforded me: hiking paths, biking trails, water parks and the Atlantic Ocean and a great climate for being outdoors. I only had one small issue: I weighed 240 pounds and didn’t want to do anything. I was never motivated to go outside, or take a walk. Being an Army Recruiter is very stressful but nowhere near physical.
I felt lazy, miserable and depressed because I was overweight, I struggled with everything. I wasn’t active at all and I couldn’t do all of the things I wanted to.
I had tried to lose weight numerous times before, but always gave up when whatever diet I was on ended. I was feeling hopeless until I went to the doctor. I was feeling dizzy and congested from seasonal allergies, I had thought. That day, the doctor had the blood results back from a physical I had taken prior.
The doctor explains that I was borderline Type 2 diabetes. That day I went home and for some reason I started thinking about all the people I knew with diabetes. I started thinking about how they have to self administer insulin. I remember thinking that, it would suck if I had to do that for the rest of my life. A week went by and the talk with the doctor was weighing heavy on my mind.
In an effort to try to start working out.
I grabbed my son’s bike and started riding on a route I normally take. I started thinking about how healthy I use to be at a younger age. Then I asked myself, What is stopping me from getting healthy again? Why do I crave sugar so much? What would my children do if I got really sick? I continued asking myself questions like this until the ride was over. Well needless to say I did not have one good answer for none of the questions. The next day when I woke I was looking in the bathroom mirror and I remember saying out loud. “Its time for you to get in shape, fatty”. “It’s time to Become Active and Get Off Of Your Ass”.
That day, I started my weight-loss journey and hasn’t looked back since. I started at 240 pounds and as of today I weight 173 pounds. The name BAGOOYA comes from that instance when I said to myself, “It’s time to Become Active and Get Off Of Your Ass”. I have found out, that just by using that word when I’m feeling lazy, gives me the mental motivation I need to kick start me into being active. One thing that constantly happens, is people always ask me what I did to lose weight? I always get asked, what do I eat and what exercises do I do? So I made the decision to try and put everything I do on a website to share it with people. I am not a fitness expert. I am just an average person that struggles with weight. But I also know as a fact. When I was looking for solutions to overcome some of the hurdles during weight loss, there are others out there that might have some of the same questions and challenges I had along the way.
This is just a place to log my journey and provide other with answers. Stop waiting to start on a specific date. You are not getting any younger, and the younger you are, the easier it is. I started at 48, which proves your age doesn’t matter in order to start. Why start six months from now? If you are really serious, Start today, START NOW! I started walking around my block. In the beginning, I went for 5 minutes, then 10 minutes and worked my way up to walking 5.6 miles daily which on average took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once I lost 50 pounds, I added lifting weights and calisthenics to my exercise activity list. As I continue I will MAKE SMALL CHANGES TO MY LIFESTYLE to increase fat burning efficiency and build muscle.
Join online weight loss forums, make weight loss journey YouTube videos. Although fitness clubs and family provide valuable support for encouragement. We are now fortunate with the internet to get support from people ALL OVER THE WORLD! YouTube, Facebook and Instagram has really cause me to be more motivated. Not only can you see your own progress over time, average everyday people are really very supportive also. Imagine that? Complete strangers, saying the right things to support your journey and giving valuable feedback and critiques, for FREE! “The best thing about the internet is, “If you don’t have access to a similar groups, pages or forums, start one yourself! Find like-minded people that will understand and support you.” It’s the internet, they are out there.
I learned to eat new fruits and vegetables and plenty of other healthy foods that I would have never even tried before. The motivation behind “EAT SOMETHING NEW” is, now I know my body requires certain foods, vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients to perform at its peak. Its my duty to provide myself with the best food I am able to get for my body to become healthier and recover from my prolonged time of being overweight. DIETS do not work, diets have a time period or an ending date. I have tried plenty of “diets” and weight loss challenges to honestly say they do NOT work long term. One of the most important discoveries I have made is, I cannot diet my way into a healthy lifestyle, It’s a lifestyle and you have to live a lifestyle and not put a date on it.
