MSU Is One of the Best Universities

First off, I’d like to say congratulations. You are all in the lucky seats. You are fresh faces at the best university . . . (and I’m not biased), plus you have the Honors College as this amazing bonus support system. Realize the privilege you have being here and take full advantage of it.

Beginning college is the most nerve-racking and exciting time. MSU is one of the largest universities in the country. There are over 50,000 students here. The waters are difficult to navigate in the beginning, but I’m here to encourage you to step out of your homogenous cocoons, as New York Times opinion writer Frank Bruni recently called it.

So what’s a homogenous cocoon? Well, being thrown into such a large university and trying to acclimate to a totally new environment can urge a safeguard where students are in a desperate search to find people whose backgrounds and interests and identical to theirs, or even to follow their old friends from high school.

This in itself is not at all a bad thing. It’s supportive. It’s safe. But you’d also be wasting a big opportunity at MSU if you limit yourself to only your safe and familiar cocoon. At MSU, you have the awesome opportunity to become comfortable with and excited about diversity.

Your freshman class is the largest and most diverse in MSU’s history! So strike up a conversation with the students across the hall who have different majors than you; reach out to an international student; join a club you never thought you would or didn’t even know existed; choose from over 275 education abroad programs to participate in (and pro tip: the Honors College has some great scholarship opportunities for studying abroad).

It’s not a bad thing to find your niche and find friends who share similar passions, but you must not let this hinder you from trying something new, from talking to someone different, from pushing yourself outside your comfortable cocoon. Take advantage of the Spartan community’s diversity during your time here, because this exposure will open you to an array of ideas and a wealth of wisdom that will put you one step ahead in whatever career path you may choose.

On a final note, I want to share that according to my parents and all of their middle age friends, this will be the best four years of our lives! We may not realize it yet, I still haven’t quite realized it. But I am here to tell you time does fly at MSU, so soak up every minute of it.

And I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to end a speech on MSU’s campus without saying . . . Go Green!
