Discrimination protection for the LGBTQ community is a topic that I already supported because I have friends and family who are members of this community and I’ve witnessed some of the ways in which they can be treated unfairly by their employers.
I believe that everyone deserves the same treatment in the workplace, but minority groups like LGBTQ need extra protection to ensure that they are treated as equals by their employerr Discrimination protection doesn’t give these people special treatment, it simply provides them with a safe work environment as well as people and services that they can reach out to for help According to an article by Emma Green, published in the Atlantic, the legalization of same-sex marriage has made is easier to discriminate against gay people in other aspects, such as spousal benefits.
Many LGBTQ people are applying for spousal benefits from their employer for the first time and have been met with unfair termination by their employers.
An argument in defense of this sort of discrimination is the principal religious freedom Many opposers of LGBTQ discrimination argue that there should be a compromise made, “that adoption of protections for gay and transgender people should be accompanied by religious exemptions for people who disagree,” (Green). However, Green argues that this is not a sufficient argument because when an employer is engaged in commercial activity and working with the general public, then they should treat all members of the general public equally. To me, treating all members of the public equally seems like common sense, and not something we would have to require from all employers.
However, during my research and personal experiences with this issue I realize that this is not always the case People of certain religious faiths are usually the biggest opposers of the LGBTQ community and argue that their beliefs give them the right discriminate against them These people are often not doing so out of spite or bad intent towards the gay community, but rather have been brought up with values and beliefs that enforce these prejudices against them. i believe that everyone is entitled to their own values, beliefs, and opinions and that they also deserve equal treatment.
However, it a person’s faith or beliefs disrespects or endangers another person or group of people, that is not a belief that a workplace or our legal system should allow. Since we can’t expect a person to share the same values as us, and we cannot force them to see the world from any other viewpoint, discrimination protection laws are necessary for those who are put at risk by prejudice against them These laws ensure a workplace or community where all members are entitled to the same benefits, rights, and treatment and gives minority groups a way to speak out against unfair treatment and to seek out help if they need it I believe that everyone is entitled to their own religious faith, but if what they believe oppresses the LGBTQ community or any other group of people, it shouldn’t be allowed in a workplace or any sort of group that is engaged with the public.
