My name is Khasmine Harris. I was born on November 12,1999 in Columbia,SC where I have lived for most of my life until the time I went to college in Gaffney,SC. I have three brothers and one sister on my dad’s side and one biological sister who lives with me, my mom and step-dad in Columbia. My mom is a teacher who graduated from the University of South Carolina and my step-dad is a cars salesman.
I graduated from Spring valley high school in June,2018 with cords from the NSHSS and an expanded organization called Key Club international and also a cross country/track and academic scholarship from Limestone College.
I used to be a cheerleader. I cheered from 5th grade-10th grade, quitting after my sophomore year in high school because I despised the coach. This made me lose interest in cheerleading. My mom kept me and my younger sister in a sport so, since I stopped cheerleading, I had to find another sport to participate in my junior year.
I’ve always been told by family members and friends that I should try track or cross country because I had the typical body of a “runner” (e.g, skinny & long legs).
I was too lazy to “learn” a new sport and risk not making the team,so the only sport I could find that no one got cut from was cross country. “It’s just running, how hard could it really be?” , I thought. Well, it was quite difficult but I ended up being really good at it with hard work , discipline and began to love it.
I made it on Varsity by the end of the season and running in State my first year. This is when colleges started to recruit me and it continued on to my senior year when I ran in State for Track as well.
I received many letters recruiting me for cross country/track and started to go on visits. It was finally senior year, which means it’s time to pick a college and apply. The one college out of the others that I felt would fit me the best with academics and athletics was Limestone College. I felt as if this school could help me improve in my sport and academic success in my major. My major is social work, I love helping people and volunteering for any cause which was the main objective of the club I was apart of in high school called Key Club International.
Also, social work is the #1 major at Limestone College. I loved the coach and evaluated the workouts he would have for us throughout the season and they seemed progressive. I made my decision and was ready to commit at the end of cross country season. I told the coach I would love to run cross country/track for Limestone and then we discussed paperwork for signing day to make it official. Now, I just had to just apply to the school. I applied and received an email 2 weeks later expressing that I had been accepted and received an academic scholarship.
