The Impact of Business on the Architecture and Development of Cities

Topics: Economics

When a city is looking for new ways to make money. one of the best ways is through business and more specifically high end businesses, businesses with upscale clientele. In order to survive. cities must lure new capital investments and the best form of this comes from high end business services. On their search to create capital, cities refashion their commercial districts by commissioning new buildings and urban plans. An example of this is the revitalization of the water-front old piers and Main Street which was turned into an emporium of mass consumption.

During this process, traditional downtowns were destroyed by the flight and decline of industry, and the competition from new shopping centers in the suburbs.

I agree because the ”name” architects also called starkitects are clearly the famous ones. They earned the title of being called starkitects not by designing what the ‘next man’ designs but through their signature designs. For example Frank O. Gehry is known for his abstract, playful organic shapes which as displayed by an episode of the Simpsons seems to come from random objects like a crumbled piece of paper.

The paper has shapes and curves that seem infinite. This is why when we see a Frank O. Gehry building even without being told we can identify it. Another examples is Michael Graves. His use of color which relates to human proportions can be picked out from a crowd of buildings.

There are two cultural products that map the landscape and architecture is one of them.

Two cultural products that most directly map the landscape are architecture and urban form. Neither of these two things are free nor unfree from market forces. Further buttressing the point that these architects work under a dual constraint which requires them to produce salable products. Furthermore. on the topic of salable products someone states “I am selling space and renting space and it has to be in a package that is attractive enough to be financially successful.” a new kind of developer has been remaking the city With something called ‘the signature building’…” and this is done through the architects placing their signature on landscape.
