Legend of Slavic Vampire

Topics: LegendVampires

Early vampire legends spread in the Balkans and eastern Europe Slavic area. In these legends, a vampire is a dead person who rises from a grave and feeds on human blood. However, with the continuous adaptation of novels, films and pop culture in the past 100 years, the common image of vampires has gradually evolved into a kind of magical crea-tures that must be kept alive by blood sucking, and have supernatural powers to move at night. We can say that confidently, Slavic has created a crazy belief due to the bloody night with dwellers in that time.

They perfected the fair and the belief of “ unknown”. As human beings, we are so curious trying to find out the truth and everything we don’t know. This is why we start to be so mad about monsters and vampires.

Vampires are unique, they are ei-ther live or dead. They have their own mind and way to act but they are not human being.

They live by feed on our blood, which is a race can never be explained by human. In the early time of west Europe, people believe in vampire just because of three milestone events : first, they are so many mysterious death, no matter the illness that can’t be explained or the murder case without finding the truth, people are willing to blame those death to an un-known monster. Second, the war of religion caused by Roman catholic church and Greek orthodox church oppose Mohammedanism. And the third one which I consider to be the most important one, the cruelty of the bloody governor since long time ago make people believe that those people are not human being. Those three mysterious, violent and igno-minious event are pushed the fanaticism of vampire to the peak by dwellers without many education.

In the early west Europe, people believe that the ancient of vampires are Cain. Cain is the son of Adam and Eve. Cain killed his brother because of jealous. So that god cures him to be a guilty person and forced out from peaceful land. He can only live by drinking peo-ple’s blood. He will never die, but will be hunted forever. Here is the origin record in the bible: The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 But the LORD said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeanceseven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden. There has been many case that dwellers live in that time deal with or see vampires. However, the mystery behind the vampire story is the is the lack of education and science knowledge. People believed that after people dead, if their body didn’t decompose at the nor-mal rate, they are vampires. Those dead body’s head need to be cut down in the grave. However, we can know from the technology and science now that human body will de-compose in really low rate when they get into underground environment ( get buried) than on the ground surface. Sometimes, there will be grave diggers check dead bodies in coffins to make sure if they are vampires. They believe if they find leak blood from their nose, ears, or mouth, they are vampires. In reality, during the decomposition process the lungs build up with a dark red bloody fluid and the braid liquifies. Actually, those people who believed to be vampires are buried with their face down in coffin.

They blood will leak out due to gravity. In this situation, lots of evidence given out to prove there is vam-pires are just the uneducated people’s blind belief. in his Philosophical Dictionary , Voltaire wrote: These vampires were corpses, who went out of their graves at night to suck the blood of the living, either at their throats or stomachs, after which they returned to their cemeter-ies. The persons so sucked waned, grew pale, and fell into consumption; while the suck-ing corpses grew fat got rosy, and enjoyed an excellent appetite. It was in Poland, Hunga-ry, Silesia, Moravia, Austria, and Lorraine, that the dead made this good cheer.Voltaire (1984) [1764]. Philosophical Dictionary . Penguin. Slavic vampire didn’t like the vampire shows on the screen now, they are beautiful or handsome, with young and white face. In the west Europe, slavic vampire have some symbolic characteristic:

  1. 1) Their skin color are usually dark or purple ( may caused by feed on vampires)
  2. 2) Their body always swell (Bacteria often cause putrefaction and bloating)
  3. 3) There are bold leaking from their nose and mouth when they are dig out
  4. 4) Their left eyes could be opened
  5. 5) Their hair and nails will keep growing after they died The Slavic vampire are believed to be a dark shadow at first. Then it will come out with a human body and live with it. In Slavic culture, if couples feel unsatisfied we then are sex, there are big chance that the baby is a vampire if the women get pregnant. They also be-lieved that children who died before baptism could become to a ugly vampire. The Slavic vampire could attack the animals and drink their blood.as well they also believe people who have contact or attack by vampires will also become to a vampire. In this way, some innocent people are burned to die because they have the suspicion to be a vampire.

Slavic people have their traditional way to deal with the vampire. They use the cross to keep vampire away and perform exorcism prayers. Villagers will dig graves at night to find people they believed to be vampires are cut their head down, pierce their heart with timber pile, and finally get burned. Giure Grando is the first person regarded as vampire in the history. He comes from Istra, located in modern Coratia. According to the ledgend, he died in 1656, and come back to his village as a vampire for 16 years. He will stand up from coffin at night and nock the door in the village.in the few days, people who has been visited by him will all die in few days. One day he even show up in front of a widow and said he’s going to rap her. When she describe what he looks like, she said that his dead body always looks out of breath, seems smiling when he staring at her bed. There are many people in the village try to beat him down, the priest grape a cross and yell at him saying: “ look, jesus! you are a vampire!

Stop torturing us!” after that , Grando start to cry and villagers dig his body out from the grave.  They try to use a timber pill poke into his heart but they can’t poke it in. Finally, a farmer cut his head down with a saw. In Slavic folk lore, the more common reason that people turn to a vampire is because of the immoral behavior such like becoming a magician. People who suicide or dead ab-normally will become a vampire. Slavic vampires can show up like a butterfly, as well as the belief they have in the ancient time, it is a symbol of a leaving soul from dead people. Some culture have also mentioned the “live dead ” or “ a people with two soul” who can leave their body when they are sleeping joining the harmful activity with vampires.
