My collaborating teacher for this interview is Ms. McIntyre, an English teacher at Miramar High School. Ms. McIntyre has been teaching for more than 15 years. From the age of 5, reading was her escape and her comfort. As she read one day, an idea suddenly hit Ms. McIntyre. Ms. McIntyre decided at the age of 8 that she’d become an English teacher. Her first taste of teaching started in the summer of 1993. Ms. McIntyre had the opportunity to oversee and tutor a group of middle schoolers.
This experience was the beginning of a great teaching career.
With a great love for literature, Ms. McIntyre enrolled in Florida Atlantic University (FAU) as an English major. With her coursework, it strengthened her writing, research abilities, and critical thinking. In FAU, Ms. McIntyre accomplished both her Bachelors and Masters degree. Ms. McIntyre took advantage of many internship programs to gain teaching experience. Her first job opportunity landed in middle school English teacher position in Miami.
With her first year of experience of teaching, she learned different instructional strategies to meet students needs. These strategies range from having interactive lessons, lessons that involve note taking, and also lessons that requires students to hear and pay attention to videos.
Asking why has she chosen this teaching profession, she responded “choosing this position was because I believed that all children can learn.” Her philosophy of education is that he believed each child is a different in which they need to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially.
“It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential and to act as a guide. She always encouraged her students in reading to improve their English skills as it will be useful in the future. Every day presents a new challenge for her but she is always prepared for what’s ahead of her. I asked her the question on whether or not this type of preparation came in time or was she fully prepared by courses and student teaching?
She told me that when she came out of college she felt that she was prepared but when it was time to teach in the classroom, she learned that things are slightly different. Her teaching experience allowed her to experience first-hand what it is like to be in a real classroom environment teaching students of various performance levels, interests, and backgrounds. It also afforded her an personal view of what a teacher is responsible for outside of the act of teaching. For example, lesson plans, grades, communicating with parents, and collaborating with faculty and staff. As a student of her in the past, working with the school, volunteering and having to be around him and interviewing, I would say McIntyre is an experienced enough teacher. I’ve noticed that with this group of students, she has taken a more student centered learning environment where students are actively involved in every lesson. Not only learning wise, she’s also greatly influential to students impacting them to better themselves as an individual for whats ahead of them.
