Getting access to education is a fundamental part in each and every human being’s life. People believe that with education, they are able to achieve life goals that they have been longed to, deal with everyday issues from a wider and more reasonable perspective, and most importantly, acquire a stable job after they pursue bachelor and master degree for higher education. Since getting a stable job is crucial, people give out all of their efforts while studying in university and college, which arises a question among students-whether they should solely focus on studying or work while studying? Having jobs while studying is a better decision for three reasons.
First and foremost, having jobs while studying lessens down the students’ living expenses. Some are fortunate to be born into a rich or average family where financial need is not an issue for them to worry about, while some are not that fortunate to be so, they have to live frugally ever since they were young, so paying tuition fee all at once and spending on living expenses are something that they cannot afford.
As a result, doing part-time jobs is the best solution to answer their financial needs. With the salaries from those part-time jobs, they can ensure their financial safety as well as decrease their parents’ burden in providing them sufficient amount of money to spend on living. Moreover, if they can earn an adequate amount of money from those jobs and try to live as frugal as possible, they are able to transfer those disposable incomes to pay for their tuition fee without doubt.
Second, having jobs while studying maximizes the students’ time management skills. As a matter of fact, studying demands a lot of efforts as well as time in reading and self-studying the technical terms, and doing the assigned tasks from lecturers, which undoubtedly manageable for students who do not have to work to support their living, but not for those who do. Being a working student means they have to go right off to work after school or right off to school after work, which leads to them having much less time to finish off the school work and review what they have learnt. However, if they are capable of handling this obstacle, separate studying and working time efficiently and manage to continue working, they will earn time management skill which is one of the important soft skills that will benefit them in the future time when they enter the working field after having acquired a stable job because companies and organizations highly expects their employees to have such skill to work for them.
Lastly, working while studying can grant students with high working opportunities. Those who are smart often choose the work that is related to the major they are currently studying. By doing so, they can apply what they have learnt at school into their work, and by the end of their senior year in undergraduate program, they will have working experience and ready to work in the field that they have desired. In fact, companies and organizations are extremely selective when it comes to employ people into their place due to the fear of ruining their companies or organizations if the employees are not capable enough to handle the work given. Hence, they often rather choose the ones that have both bachelor or master degree and working experience than those who only have the certificate of degree but lack working experience, which is a great opportunity for working students to have higher chance of getting selected into work than non-working students. In addition, this leads students from average families to apply for work while finishing their degree even if they can afford the tuition fee in order to guarantee themselves a job after graduating.
On the other hand, opponents with the opposite view regard working as a threat to the students’ study, for it might divert the students’ attention from studying to mainly on working instead. However, it is not as serious as they make it sounds to be. Those students are knowledgeable and educated enough to know what they should and should not do, and they have been through consideration more than once before choosing to be working students, so it means that they are ready and capable of managing their time for studying while working. In fact, to some extent, some companies and organizations do not really look forward to candidates who apply for work to have high GPA during their study as long as they meet the requirements in terms of work experience. For instance, back in 2017, Google company declared that they do not need their candidates who apply to work for their company to have high or average GPA or any higher education certificate to be selected, as long as they are capable to meet Google’s requirements is enough.
To conclude, there are many good and logical reasons to have jobs while studying. As a proof, research has shown that the number of working students has been rapidly increasing throughout these past few years and more organizations started to value candidates’ work experience, capabilities and other important skills more than their certificates. Hence, having jobs while studying is seriously an advantageous decision that each and every student should take into account after entered university or college.
