Geography Determines Car Preferences

After interviewing Damon, I knew about the fact that he restored an old car with his father and turned it into a new one. I noticed that he was interested in American Muscle cars, and so was I. Though, being interested in American Muscle cars was abnormal in my country. Most if not everyone was interested in Four Wheel Drive cars. I guess the reason for that is that geography can really determine car preferences. Meaning that depending on the terrain, people choose the car they think is suitable.

A Muscle car is an American term for high-performance cars with big engines. The term originated somewhere between the 1960s and early 1970s while the first muscle car was in 1949 (Trotta, “Muscle Car History”). The popularity of muscle cars declined through the early 1970s due to several financial and environmental factors. But, they were revived recently when car manufacturers created modern muscle cars. Modern Muscle cars are mainly manufactured in America. They aren’t intended to be driven on bumpy roads and sandy terrain.

Bumpy roads with speed humps can result in the car getting damaged because it’s so close to the ground. Also, you can’t drive modern Muscle cars on sandy terrains because they are so heavy that you will get stuck in the sand (“Why Geography Matters When You’re Shopping for a Car”).

A four-wheel-drive car (also called 4×4) refers to a vehicle where all the wheels work simultaneously to provide more traction. In 1899, the first 4×4 car was manufactured in Vienna (Nice, “How Four-Wheel Drive Works”).

4×4 cars are mainly manufactured in Japan and other countries like Germany and America. One of the biggest advantages of a 4×4 car are that it can be driven anywhere, whether it’s a bumpy road or a sandy terrain. It can handle harsh weather and terrain conditions. That’s why a lot of people use 4×4 cars in my country.

I think geography plays a big role in car preferences. Geography affects the price of cars and their parts. Prices affect car preferences. For example, Cars manufactured by American companies are pretty expensive in the UAE and car parts are rare to find. That’s why people tend to avoid buying them. Instead, they buy cars that are manufactured in Japan since they are cheap and easy to fix if damaged. Also, geography determines terrain which directly affects the type of car people buy. For a country where you have to go through off-roads, you’re going to need a 4×4 car. You can’t just drive a sports car because it’s just not efficient.

Damon’s artifact was a red 1969 Chevrolet El Camino. Restored by Damon and his father, the car was transformed into a beauty. What’s even more amazing is that both of Damon and his father did that without any professional help whatsoever. To me, that is a very great result they’ve achieved. I would’ve said it was not possible had I not seen it with my eyes. I think the car is very important to Damon because he has spent two years and a half with his father trying to restore the car. And that holds a very special connection between them.
Damon comes from Indiana and it’s probably normal for him to like American Muscle cars. Even though I come from the UAE and I have a 4×4 car, I still like American Muscle cars more. My brother even bought a blue 2011 Camaro and has sent me a video of it as he knows that I’m interested in Muscle cars. Being interested in Muscle cars was a similar thing between me and Damon that connected us deeply when I interviewed him.
