Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role?

To provide support to the Service Users in Peculiar care home with aim to add value to their lives, under take care work with the sensitivity required to provide services in way to which will preserve the dignity, privacy, choice, independence, fulfilment and rights of the service user and his/her usual carer/family members, also to provide a high quality, reliable support service tailored to suit our service users’ care plans or persons centred planning and also help to put down their risk assessment

In social care setting my duties and responsibilities include giving service users individual care, such as supporting the individual with personal care, dressing, continence requests including changing diapers for service users that are dependent, and convene care.

Also helping with dietary requirements such as meal planning, preparation, feeding, administering medication, shopping, cleaning the environment, laundry.

My duty is to make sure that the service users maintains healthy life style and to promote the service user’s well-being. It is also my duty to ensure that I work as trained and follow the company’s policies, procedures, carry out and keep records of the services provided; along with responsibility for ensuring that my training needs are current so that I am at the level of standards required to undertake my role. I make sure confidentiality is maintained at all times, I ensure service users personal details are kept safe and kept away from unauthorised persons under the Personal Data Protection Regulation Act 2018, I support the service users family as well, emotionally, encouraging them when overwhelmed.

I maintain a safe environment for the service users as I owe them duty of care, I support service users in an outdoor activity that best suits the service users. My duty and role is to protect the service user from any form of abuse, self-harm, I support service users to make informed choices which is to their best interest and never assume they don’t have mental capacity unless proven and even when proven, is till support tom their best interest. My responsibility is to ensure my employers don’t lose business or go to court to defend any case due to negligence in safeguarding the service user. Is also my duty to respect the service user and uphold their dignity at all times, it also my responsibility to be aware of the legislation regarding social care.I ensure that administrative procedures are followed, for example completing care notes, reports health records etc.

Explain expectations about own work role as expressed in relevant standards?

To ensure that my roles, responsibilities and duty of care are being met, there are standards which are relevant to my jobs and come with description and information. In other to carry out my duties and responsibilities here are standards which is called the Minimum standards, this standards helps safeguard the service users and also informs me of right, my right as a staff.

National occupational standards- this describes the practice which brings together skills, knowledge and values, NOS are valuable tools to be used as a benchmarks for qualification as well as defining roles at the work, staff recruiting, supervision and appraisal.

Health and Social Care Act 2008 –was established by CQC Care Quality Commission they monitor, inspect and regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and publish a report, including performance ratings to help people choose care.

The Equality Act 2008 – The Equality Act became law in October, 2010. It replaced previous legislation (such as the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995) and ensures consistency in what employers and employees need to do to make their workplaces a fair environment and comply with the law.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 – is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety. Your employer should display a copy of this Act on their main premises.

Human Rights Act – gives rights and freedoms that impact on matters of life and death, they also affect the rights you have in your everyday life: what you can say and do, your beliefs, your right to a fair trial and other similar basic entitlements. The Act covers: The right to life ,Protection against torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment ,Freedom from slavery and forced labour ,Liberty and security of a person , A fair and public trial within a reasonable time in No punishment without law ,Respect for private and family life, home and correspondence Freedom of thought, conscience and religion , right to express, right of assembly and association The right to marry and found a family , Prohibition of discrimination in the enjoyment of convention rights. With this standard I am aware the service users have right as a human being, as a citizen of the country.

Describe how to work effectively with others?

In other to work effectively with others there some skills required, good communication skills is necessary tools to be able to work effectively, it makes the job simple and helps build relationship in a work place, another effective way to work is through team work, to carry out job duties and responsibilities easier and faster, team work is key, working as a team helps to know boundaries and it helps discover line of reporting. When I resume the shift for the day, myself and the team leader plan how the day will go, each chores are delegated, we work as team so the shift goes easy and stress free, we are able to achieve our goals for the day which is in the service users’ best interest and safeguarding the service users.

.1 Explain the importance of reflective practice in continuously improving the quality of service provided,

Reflect practice is defined as a way of reminiscing on initial or past occurrences, good or bad and how it could have been handled or resolved, it is a self-regulated process, commonly used in health and teaching professions, it is the ability to reflect on action and so as to engage in the process of learning.

There was an incident with a service user’s mother, where she complained about me not engaging the kids and reported the incident to the management, the management summoned me for a supervision, after wards, all what the client’s mother told the management were all lies, so I felt bad, and emotional that it showed on my face, I was upset and told the management to take me off the shift, I was down morally, I was knocked down because I felt I put in all effort to please the service users mum and it was not appreciated, when I got home that day on my bed, about to sleep, I reflected on the issue, I how I would have handled it better, I discovered and learnt that I should not allow my emotions get the best of me when there is a complain, I realised the complaint helps me grow, it also helped me learn to manage people’s emotions as they are also overwhelmed about the condition of their child. So I requested that I am trained on emotion intelligence. Improvement is a continuous process because legislations are changing, lack of improvement affect the job.

Reflective practice plays a significant role in helping one discover his or her weakness and will improve on it.

2.3 Describe how own values, belief, systems, and experiences may affect working practice?

Values and belief systems shapes us, we all come from different back grounds, environments, educations, moral influences, religious belief, all this factors can affect working practice, the way we relate with people depends on what we belief in and our back grounds but however, we owe our client, service users the duty of care, there code of conducts, where duty clashes with the conduct

I was at a MAPA training and the trainer made a statement about allowing the service user fall, in some cases preventing them from falling also cause more harm than good, I was amazed at statement, because in my belief system and coming from background as in how I was raised, when someone falls or trying to fall, you help them in other for them not to fall, so he went on and explained that servicer user or the victim can claim that as a result of me preventing them from falling they got hurt, so in that situation when I am not sure of the safety of myself and the service user, I should allow them fall in other not to get into trouble or hurt them more.

3.1 Evaluate own knowledge, performance and understanding against relevant standard?

Knowledge is power, as Christian even my book of instruction and guidance says; my people perish cause of lack of knowledge, working in the social and health care sector has widen my knowledge, it has raised my consciousness concerning the code of practice regarding health and social care, the Health & Safety at work Act 1978 make me ensure I keep myself and the service user safe at work, and I owe my service users the duty of care, the Manual Handling Operation Regulation 1992 ( amended 2002) gives me understanding about avoiding handling operation that involves risk of injury, evaluation makes me helps me discover areas where I am lacking and the new skills or knowledge I have learnt since i believe we all learn everyday as nobody is an fountain of knowledge.

4.1, identify sources of support for planning and reviewing own development?

There are different sources of support for planning and reviewing, for me, I review my development through monthly one to one supervision with my line manager, as required by the National Occupational Standard, there I am made to understand my weakness and strength, during the discussion my manager encourage me to continue with best practice which I show my other colleague, I also develop myself by reviewing the training have done and the training I need to do, there was a situation in one of my shift, the service user locked my shirt, I did not know how to get him off me, I had to call for help, I reported it to my team leader, I requested for a training in MAPA (Management of actual or potential aggression ) which helped me spot the signs of challenging behaviours. I also get source of support from more experienced colleagues by working with them and understudy them. I do short online courses which help me own development.

5.1 Evaluate how learning activities have affected practice?

The training on Medication Awareness taught me how to safely support a service users with their medication needs whilst using a person centred approach, I know the definition of drugs and the medication legislation that guides medications, I have learnt that controlled drugs must have 2 witnesses when administering, 2 signature after administering on to mars sheet, and are kept for minimum of 7 years. This learning activity also taught me there are 8 Rs, I.e. making sure I give the right person the medication, the right medication, right time, right dose, right route (oral or intravenous )the service user has the right to refuse the medication rather force them

5.2 Explain how reflective practice has led to improved ways of working?

Reflective practice has led improved ways I work, cause after the shift ends, I sit back with my colleagues to reflect on action before, during and after shift, I listen to my colleagues’ views, I ask question about my action during the shift, I also take feedback from others like my line manager, parents and young people as it is important to work together to achieve the best outcome for the interest of the service users, reflect practice has improved my emotional intelligence, help me manage people’s emotions and my emotions as we; it has help manage and deal with difficulty parents, it has helped to respect people’s value religion and belief

5.3 Explain why continuing professional development is important?

Continuing professional development is important because it helps build confidence at the work place, it ensure I have professional competence at work, it helps me maintain the skills I need in other to do my job effectively, it helps stay abreast of the standards involve in social and health care as they change every day. It helps me enhance my skills and abilities.
