Playing sports, there is always winning. Playing sports, there is always losing, but the player doesn’t just lose; their effort will reach their dream in the future. Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in her 2016 concession speech consoles and demonstrates gratitude toward her supporters. Clinton’s purpose is to demonstrate gratitude towards her supporters. She adopts a gracious, positive tone in order to convince her audience that the fight is not over and to remain positive in the future. Clinton is effective in her speech, she utilizes repetition, ethos, and pathos.
Clinton expresses her thoughts in the “ 2016 concession speech” by emphasizing the importance of this last election. Respect towards to her supporters by using repetition to show more details in her goals. She mentioned this in the beginning of her speech, “ Our campaign was never about a person or even one election. It was about the country we love and building an America that is hopeful, inclusive, and big-hearted. We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought…”.
Repetition is being used here and many places in her speech. She constantly using the word “one voice”,”we”,” us”,” together” shows like Clinton and her supporters as one team. Clearly, this shows Clinton wants to emphasize that election is not solo play, it is team play. Even she lost her election, she still esteems her supporters because without them she could not come that far, which brings more attention to the strong relationship between Clinton and supporters/citizens.
Clinton used repetition in her speech to prove the strong relations between her supporters, but on the other hand, this literary device is also made a great impact of credibility as candidates of the president, which is ethos. Once again, when Clinton uses the word like we, our, us, together represents a team or describes the shape of the United State of America. She mentioned this in her speech, “ Making our economy work for everyone, not just those at the top, protecting our country and protecting our planet.” This part is one of the most significant pieces of this speech by sharing her views of America’s economy. She did not just regret the loss of her election. She actually appreciated the participation of the government which results in the economic condition that the united state has today. This is like one person holding another person’s back to support their balance. Each one of the people is important in order to work in this society and economy. Nothing can be missed, nothing can not be denied. All race, all religions, and all the men and women are significant to beneficial to remain positive in the future.
Clinton shows ethos by describing her credibility throughout the connection between her supporters in order to protect their country. In the same way, she shared her emotion with her supporter throughout her losses of the election, which is pathos. Their dreams, hopes, and goals are at the same category, they wanted to Clinton to win her election. She said this in her speech, “ I know how disappointed you feel because I feel it too. And so do tens of millions of Americans who invested their hopes and dreams in this effort. This is pain, and it will be for a long time.” Here, she implies that she and her supporters are had the same passion for this election and also she applies the word “ pain” to classify the types of emotions they are sharing and make her audience to the empathy of her feeling to set readers’ mind on her side.
All in all, Clinton used three literary devices repetition, ethos, and pathos to show how she demonstrates gratitude towards her supporters and proves to her audience that their battle is not over and to remain positive in the future. She fought bravely, even though she lost her election, she did not blame anyone, or she did not quit. She actually appreciates her voters and everyone who supports her, and her spirits did not just blow away. Her spirits kept moving straight until Clinton and her supporters reached their goals.
