I believe research is a key component in moving the Nursing profession forward. My career goal is to become a nurse scientist, who will elevate our profession through evidence-based research, as well as help patients better manage their illnesses and have optimal healthcare outcomes.
I believe research is a key component in moving the Nursing profession forward. My career goal is to become a nurse scientist, who will elevate our profession through evidence-based research, as well as help patients better manage their illnesses and have optimal healthcare outcomes.
My nursing education was done at the University of South Alabama. It was there that I was first exposed to the importance of healthcare research. There are two areas of evidence-based research that I studied that I think of nearly every day in my work. The first concerned the need to properly disinfect injection ports and hubs on catheters, which eventually turned into the Joint Commission’s “Scrub the Hub!” Campaign.
The second concerned the negative effects of the instillation of saline in suctioning adult patients on mechanical ventilation. Evidence-based research continues to have a profound impact on my daily work.
My practicum was done in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. I saw firsthand the devastating effects of uncontrolled hypertension, obesity, heart disease and diabetes. From the onset of my Practicum, I felt more had to be done to help patients before they become critically ill. Further research can be the bridge to determine how we can more effectively help these patients.
I have worked in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Providence Hospital for the past three years. Shortly after starting work there, our hospital adopted the “Sepsis Protocol” based on evidence-based research proving that early recognition of sepsis saves lives. The protocol is quite intense, and all steps need to be strictly followed. The research that has been done to develop this protocol is very exciting, and it has played a part in my interest in pursuing a research-focused doctorate.
While I have no experience in clinical research to date, I am hopeful that I will be considered, and confident that I well do well in the program. My research interest most closely matches the research expertise of Dr. Pamela Bowen. The majority of patients in my region suffer from obesity-related illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. My belief that more research needs to be done to help these patients is congruous with that of Dr. Bowen.
