Gay marriage in America is slowly becoming more and more common. If two people love each other very much, they deserve to have the right to marry each other. Gay marriage should not be illegal in America because there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, people who object to gay marriage often cite religious reasons for their objections, and because when two people love each other they deserve to have the right to be married no matter what objections. There is no reason that gay marriage should be illegal in America based on these three reasons.
When some Americans view two members of the same-sex trying to get married, it is seen as an obscene gesture because they do not accept homosexuality. These Americans, however, do not understand that when a same-sex couple wants to or gets married, marriage has nothing to do with these persons who are objecting.
Most people are not able to wrap their minds around gay marriage because they choose not to.
This is where ignorance comes in. When one chooses not to listen to reason and facts, people become ignorant. Ever since the beginning of time, societies have expected that marriage should be between a male and a female. However, coming out as a homosexual has been a problem for a while. There have been accounts of homosexual people being stoned to death Homosexuals were also sent to death with the Jews and many other groups of people in World War II. The homosexuals that were not stoned to death and that were not sent to death camps kept their secret hidden, because they did not want to die.
Some Americans should learn from history and come to the conclusion that homosexual persons should not be harmed for either coming out as being a homosexual or for wanting to marry another homosexual. As there is nothing wrong with being a homosexual or wanting to marry another homosexual. The choice is entirely up to the one wanting to marry someone of the same sex. However, the biggest problem people have with gay marriage, is that it violates some person’s religious beliefs.
This is probably the biggest reason why gay marriage is illegal in some states of America. A majority of the people that live in America identify themselves with some type of religion. Christianity is the largest religious group represented in America. Many Christians believe that gay marriage is prohibited in the Bible and that it should be taken seriously. However, there are many verses in the Bible that people do not follow and nobody is a perfect Christian; thus there is no reason same-sex marriage should be singled out as being prohibited.
Even though scripture seems to acknowledge only marriage between a male and a female. Some Americans believe that when a same-sex couple gets married, their own personal freedom will be compromised. Some religious groups in America go so far as to say that it violates their own religious freedom because it is supposed to be a marriage between a man and a woman. Christians, however, are not the only religious persons that are against same-sex marriage. Islamic practitioners are also against gay marriage. Douglas Murray, writer of Gay Families Are Not a Threat to Religion, put it well when he said “equal [same-sex marriage] rights with religion will be argued for many years to come.” (Murray). Murray wrote that book in 2013, and with the gay marriage and religious debate as it is today, he is impossible to disagree with. Although many more homosexual people are getting married in states like California.
Also, people that started out as some religion figured out they were gay. As a result, they have stopped believing in that religion if it does not accept homosexuality and gay marriage. In Eskridge’s book, Gay Marriage: For Better or for Worse? What We’ve Learned From The Evidence, he describes, “two homosexual males who are not married because it is not legal in the state they live in. One of the men’s names is Baker. He brought his partner McConnell to a Roman Catholic Church for a church service. Baker was a practicing Catholic at the time, and McConnell told him that the Roman Catholic Church was against gay marriage. Baker was shocked, and quickly changed his mind about becoming a Catholic, and ever since then they have both remained without a religion.” (Eskridge, 12).
If religious Americans can see past the fact that gay marriage is illegal according to the Bible and other holy books, there is a chance for it becoming legal. Murray put it well when he said, “Denying members of our society on religious grounds for same-sex marriage is a war on decency.” (Murray). Finally, if two people love each other, there should not be any illegalities that should keep them from marrying each other.
When it comes to gay marriage, many people do not believe that two people of the same- sex could be perfectly happy with each other. However, it is just the same as a man and a woman getting married. Two same-sex people who love each other very much can make a sacred vow that they will stay with each other for the rest of their lives. Many people cannot accept the idea of gay marriage because they think that the vow should be made between a man and a woman.
A person can have an opinion about whether a man and man, or a woman and a woman should not be married, but that is just an opinion. There should not be a law based on a collection of opinions, even if it is written in the Bible or some other holy book. With that being said, a person should not deny the right of marriage to anyone because that person thinks gay marriage is not right. If a man and a man want to get married, that is their choice. A person can have an opinion as to why homosexuals should not marry, but regardless, they should still have the right to get married and it is simply an opinion. It is a fact that gay men are marrying other gay men more than lesbian women marrying other lesbian women.
Rydstrom, writer of Odd Couples: A History Of Gay Marriage In Scandinavia, states that when gay marriage was signed into a law into Denmark, “women did not take advantage of this situation at first, but later became more interested in the thought of a same-sex marriage.” (Rydström, 128). Which means that gay marriage is becoming more common around the world, since this book was written in 2012 and written about the activities in Scandinavia. However, there are some cases where homosexual people are afraid to admit they actually are homosexuals. In fact, most people who consider themselves gay do not want to admit that they are gay because they will be taunted and abused.
For example, the person that played the Blue Ranger from The Power Rangers was gay and left the show because he was being harassed for being gay. The same goes with gay marriage, some couples do not want to get married because they are afraid of the abuse and messages they will receive. Although today some gay couples are not afraid to show that they are in love with each other. They are also not afraid to get married. This also brings about a problem when a same-sex couple gets married and wants to have children. Many Americans see same-sex couples as unfit parents and that they are unable to make smart decisions with their children.
Stone, Carrie Culhane, and John G, writers of Same Sex Legal Kit for Dummies, states that when thinking of adopting a child to be careful when choosing. More than likely that child will witness some type of abuse and taunt towards his same-sex parents. In fact, most same-sex couples choose not to adopt because they do not want their children being discriminated against like their parents were. When two same sex couples love each other very much, just like a heterosexual couple does, they deserve to have a child to love and to take care of. As stated before, many Americans believe that the only fit parents for a child is a man and a woman.
Likewise, a same-sex couple should have equal benefits as a non-same-sex couple. Mello, writer of Legalizing Gay Marriage, writes that “…in Vermont same-sex couples were granted equal benefits and equal rights as non-same-sex couples.” Unfortunately they still could not marry. Mello continued with, “I believe that the marriage-like benefits for same-sex couples are still not as sufficient to those of non-same-sex couples.” (Mello, 157). In Mello’s book there is no point of granting same-sex couples equal rights if they are still not allowed to be married. Gay married couples should have the same rights as a heterosexual couple.
On the other hand, those who oppose gay marriage poses a problem to society. If gay marriage becomes legal in many more states in America it could spark something else. For example, transgender people might demand equal rights and think that it would be correct to marry someone else that is transgender. Another few examples are grown adults trying to marry children and people trying to become polygamists. The legalization of gay marriage in more states in America could bring about many problems. Namely, the practice of Christianity in America specifically would likely decrease because people that are against gay marriage say it is not right according to the Bible.
Although other religious groups that are also against gay marriage would notice a decrease in their religion as well. A decrease in Christianity, for example, would bring about an increase in atheism or agnosticism because they would technically not have a religion. Also, gay married couples would want the same privileges and rights as straight couples, which could bring about many problems as well. Objectors to gay marriage would say that same-sex couples should not be allowed to have a child. Mainly because the objectors would see the same-sex couple as unfit parents for a child. Objectors would believe that it is too out of the ordinary for a child to have two same-sex parents, and that it would not be right.
Legalizing gay marriage would go against the Bible and other holy books according to religious practitioners. Many Christians would be infuriated if “the word of God” was not being translated correctly to the public and being obeyed. Gay marriage goes against the Christian’s own beliefs and infringes on their rights. Bobby Ross, Jr. is a reporter and editor, and he is may currently the managing editor for The Christian Chronicle. In his article, Gay Marriage Could Infringe on Religious Liberties, “unless gay marriage bills protect religious liberties, the gay marriage bills hurt the church’s convictions” (Ross).
Therefore, gay marriage would not send a good message across to the Christians. Judeo-Christians also believe marriage should be a holy vow between a man and a woman, as it was between early patriarchs such as Isaac, Jacob, and their wives. It does not make sense and God would not approve of a same-sex marriage. Gay marriage would violate “God’s word” and the same-sex couples would be seen as ultimate sinners. As some religious people say, “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” The other God’s of other religions would not approve of gay marriage as well.
Gay marriage is an extremely controversial issue today in America. Many Christians, other religious groups, and non-religious people believe that it is wrong. However, many other people believe there is nothing wrong with it. California is just one of the states where it is completely legal for same-sex couples to get married. Many same-sex couples travel here to obtain an official marriage license to get married. As stated before there is nothing wrong with gay marriage. If two people love each other with the same unconditional love as heterosexual couple, why deny them the right of being able to marry each other?
Christians and other religious groups can have their own opinions as to why it is wrong, but when it comes down to it, it is just an opinion and it is unfair to make laws out of opinions. Even if it goes against their holy book or scripture, gay marriage would not affect the objectors in any way. Ultimately the same-sex couple can decide for themselves on whether or not they want to be married. Of course, same-sex marriage has to be legal in the state in which a same-sex couple is capable of having a legal marriage. Otherwise the couple would have to go to a different state to be married. Which many couples do end up doing if it is illegal in their state.
