A wolf is a “wild carnivorous mammal which is the largest member of the dog family, living and hunting in packs”. In the poem “Wolf” by Keki Daruwalla, we see a young child haunted and /or traumatized by the howls of a wolf. The child is somewhat confused as to why the howls of the wolf were of despair as they were such powerful creatures. In the poem we see the poet comparing the wolf’s radiating presence to a lit fire as well as to an unknown myth as one cannot anticipate its’ “careful and calculated movements”, which furthermore makes it seem more dangerous.

Although this is the case, the poet is baffled about how such a strong and courageous creature with the ability to hunt for its own food and have the freedom to move stealthily around its territory could become vulnerable and to his greatest shock, become the hunted.

In the poem, “The Birds of North Europe” by Tabish Kair, we see a free verse poem written in eight stanzas with three lines each stanza.

We see that the poets thoughts remain unbroken which becomes a poem containing Enjambment. Enjambment refers to the run-on lines whereby the poets thoughts continues onto the next line with the absence of any punctuation. It is evident that the poet starts a new idea in one stanza but continues to speak of that same idea in the following stanza and so on and so forth. The lack of punctuation further indicates that there less pauses in the poem which thus determines the pace in which the poem is read.

The pace and/or rhythm of the poem also represents the mood in which it is written and since this is a poem that has a quick-paced rhythm, it could reflect the kind of mood the poet is in.

In the “Nature” poems found in the Indian poetry anthology and the “nature” poems found in “One Eye’d Leigh” by Katherine Kilalea, we find that similarly these poems do not have a rhyme scheme. Although this is the case it is evident that the poems found in the Indian poetry anthology do not have a particular structure but in the poems from “One Eye’d Leigh”, we see that each poem has its own unique structure set, for example the “Portrait of the beach” has eleven stanzas with four lines each stanza or “Sleeping bridges” which has three stanzas with four lines each stanza. These poems consist of stories with either a lesson behind the tale or the poet somehow describing himself or herself. In the “Nature” poems found in the Indian poetry anthology we see that the stories being told come with a greater meaning and/or even a greater lesson to be learnt, for example in the poem “Banyan Tree” by Rabindranath Tagore we see the speaker having a conversation with the tree asking it if it has any memories of a child that used to rest on his branches but now no longer does, whether it has memories of the sunlight reflecting on the joyous movements of the water and/or the women that used to come to fill up their water jugs. Thus the meaning behind this poem is to appreciate nature and all the things that it offers. Another example is the poem “The crocodile and the monkey” by Vikram Seth which speaks of a friendship between a crocodile and a monkey which was tarnished because of the betrayal of the crocodile to the monkey and the lesson learnt from this poem is that even the closest people to you and/or the people that you trust can turn their backs on you. This poem is an example of narrative poetry which tells a story that usually has a beginning, a body, a climax as well as a conclusion. In the nature poems in “One Eye’d Leigh” we see that the poems also tell a story but these stories are more of the poet telling us about his/her experiences and what he/she has encountered, this is also known as dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue is spoken in the first person, in some instances the speaker addresses either an invisible recipient and/or recipients and from the speakers words, we often learn more about the speaker than intended. In the poem “Portrait of the beach” we see the speaker describing a beach setting and other events that happened on the beach which in turn describes a dramatic monologue. In the Indian poetry it is evident that there is a presence of emotive language, whereby the speaker uses certain words to make the audience feel a certain way, but in “One Eye’d Leigh” it is evident that the choice in diction is more casual with less emotive language. Although the Indian poetry and “One Eye’d Leigh” share similarities we see some differences between them through the images that they form, different structures that are used as well as the language and/or diction used.
