The Concert that I attended was The Symphony at WKU In Concert Fourth Annual Halloween Concert. The song that were played were Toccata and Fugue in D minor (1708), Danse Macabre (1874), Totentanz (1849), The Isle of the Dead (1909), and an orchestral version of Michal Jackson’s Thriller. The genre of music we heard was classical symphony concert music. I thought the music that was played was good and spooky enough to fit the Halloween Feel that they were going for.
J. S. Bach was the musician who wrote Toccata and Fugue in D minor (1708).
Bach had a Baroque music style. He was Born in Eisenach (Thuringia) in the year 1685 and died in 1750. Some of his Famous pieces included The Well-Tempered Clavier, Mass in B minor, and Concerto for Two Violins.
Camille Saint-Saens was the musician who wrote Danse Macabre (1874). He Was born in 1835, Paris, France and died December 16, 1921. He had a music style of secular choral Some of his famous Pieces included The Carnival of the Animals, Le cygnet, and Samson and Delilah.
Franz Liszt was the musician who wrote Totentanz (1849). He was born in October 22, 1811, Raiding, Austria and died July 31, 1886. He had a music style of symphonic poem. Some of his famous Pieces included La campanella, Liebesträume, and Les preludes.
Sergei Rachmaninov was the musician who wrote The Isle of the Dead (1909). He was born in April 1, 1873, Starorussky Uyezd and died March 28, 1943. He had a Romantic music style. Some of his famous Pieces included Vocalise, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Polka Italienne.
The instruments that were used in the Concert were Violins, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet, Bassoon, Contrabassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Brass Trombone, Tuba, Timpani & Percussion, Harp, and Piano.
The sound of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor is usually associated with horror films. The Toccata and Fugue is most commonly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach but there is an open debate among musicologists about its authorship. There are several aspects of the piece that are unusual for organ works for the time and place it was written. There are the parallel octaves of the opening, the solo pedal statement of the fugal subject, and the conclusion of the work on a minor plagal.
The Isle of the Dead was Inspired by a painting made by Arnold Böcklin which went by the same name. The Painting was of a solitary island-bound boat bearing a coffin. The opening is dark and mysterious and For a very long time the song moves forward with little sense of destination, but with a growing urgency, but then the island comes into sight and the music gains force.
The Composition I liked best was the surprise orchestral version of Thriller by Michal Jackson. While its presence was predictable given the sense that it was a Halloween concert, the orchestral version of the song sounded better and more upbeat than the original. This was my favorite because of how they were able to orchestrate a song that was played with different instruments in mind.
Overall, I thought the concert was good. The songs were good and fitting for the theme that they were presenting, the setup and delays were quick and consistent, and that everyone preformed without error.
