Topic Sentence
The key to good health is through healthy living, which solves all health concerns at their root by addressing the cause rather than the symptom of the problem and even provides multiple physiological and psychological benefits.
Elaboration
It also comprises of the more abstract and complex behaviours like our thinking patterns, beliefs, manners, social interaction, and so on.
Thus, our lifestyle affects our health, and medicine alone cannot get rid of all our health problems unless we also change our lifestyle-The cause of majority of preventable diseases such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes, which is prevalent in developed nations, stem from an unhealthy lifestyle and can be easily avoided through proper dietary restraint and regular exercise rather than relying on medicine-Some medicines treat symptoms but can’t cure the illness that causes the symptoms-Medical professionals even believe that the risk of getting diseases where hereditary factors come into play, like cancer or diabetes, can be significantly reduced by leading a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle
An active and well balanced lifestyle also improves our mental health as it increases self-confidence, energy and happiness.
Example: In the United Kingdom, according to the Health and Social Care Information Centre, 61.
7% of adults are overweight including 24.8% of them who are obese. The rise in obesity or overweight problems has been attributed to an indulgent lifestyle of inactivity and more significantly, a high calorie diet, raising the risk of health problems like heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer.
These problems have no permanent medical treatment.
The only way that can help these people achieve a sound health is through exercise and cutting back on food consumption. Therefore, lifestyle plays a more important role in maintaining the good health of a person. Many people have an addiction to vices like smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and drugs.
Smoking cigarettes causes 90% of all lung cancer deaths and 80% of all deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It also causes stroke and coronary heart disease, which are among the leading causes of death in the United States.
Continued alcohol use in large amounts are associated with many health problems. Drug abuse not only harms your body but also affects your mental health. It causes paranoia, aggressiveness, hallucinations, impaired judgment, impulsiveness, loss of self-control-All these harmful effects cannot be stopped by using medicine alone. The only way to get rid of these harmful effects is to change our lifestyle and stop using these substances.
Concluding statement
Thus, I believe that a healthy lifestyle plays a critical role in keeping diseases away and improving our mental and physical health, hence lifestyle is the key to good health.
Presenting my perspective
Topic Sentence: Medication is not the solution to all our health problems as some physical illnesses cannot be solved by medicine but can only be eradicated by changing our lifestyle.
Elaboration
With all the advances in health and technology, the modern marvels in medicine has succeeded in curbing some lethal diseases, but only up to a certain point. There still are diseases whose cure remains elusive despite all the efforts from medical communities. Some medicines can only relieve pain but do not get rid of the source of the problem
Hence, it is more effective to prevent these diseases by leading a healthy lifestyle so as to maintain a good health
Example
If you pull a muscle, the doctor would prescribe you with pain relievers, or analgesics like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. These medicines block the pathways that transmit pain signals from the injured body part to lessen your pain while your body recovers. It does not get rid of the source of the pain and your muscle will still be pulled. However, it can be avoided by warming-up prior to a workout to prepare your muscles for the strenuous activity they are about to endure.
Lozenges may soothe a sore throat, but it will not kill the nasty strep bacteria. However, drinking enough fluids to prevent dehydration, avoiding irritants, such as smoke, fumes, shouting, and avoiding use of tobacco producers can prevent a sore throat
As people get older, they sometimes develop chronic or long-term conditions. Medicines can help control health problems like high blood pressure (hypertension) or high cholesterol. These drugs don’t cure the underlying problem, but they can help prevent some of its body-damaging effects over time. However, leading a healthy lifestyle, like having a balanced diet, cutting back on salt, exercising regularly and limiting the alcohol consumption can prevent high blood pressure.
Likewise, by choosing to avoid trans fats and consuming healthier fats instead, limiting your dietary cholesterol, selecting whole grains, eating more fruits and vegetables can prevent high cholesterol
A person who gets negative criticisms only from his friends and relatives is at a risk of developing mental abnormalities like depression. Although medicines have been developed for curing mental problems such as depression, their use cannot improve the lives of people on social ground.
However, improved lifestyle can ensure sound mental and social health at the same time. This is true because, a person with good lifestyle is likely to have good friends, than a person who is uncivilized.
Concluding statement
Therefore, lifestyle is more effective and is the key to good health rather than medicine as medicine cannot solve all our health problems.
Topic Sentence
However, there are a few exceptions as medicine can prevent us from contracting some diseases which cannot be prevented by changing our lifestyle
Opposing Arguments
One type of disease preventing medicine is vaccine
A vaccine is made from very small amounts of weak or dead germs that can cause diseases, for example, viruses, bacteria, or toxins. It prepares your body to fight the disease faster and more effectively so that you will not fall sick.
Vaccines play an important role in keeping us healthy.
They protect us from serious and sometimes deadly diseases like haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and measles.
It is an unavoidable reality, with millions depending on them daily to make good health a reality for them, and as such play a critical and significant role in good health
Diseases such as Polio, Rubella and even the common cold, affect and kill thousands on a daily basis are only preventable through vaccines and medication, without which, they would remain prevalent in countries like Polio and Rubella and remain fatal to billions worldwide.
Rebuttal
However, these vaccines still have to be backed by a good immune system, hence a healthy lifestyle is still important in maintaining a good health.
Elaboration
There are circumstances when medicines can be used for both prevention and cure of the health problems.
Example
For example, the use of polio or tuberculosis vaccines in a newly born child is one example of a preventive function of medicine. There are many circumstances when the common health problems are treated through allopathic treatment. However, these medicines aren’t perfect and moreover, requires a supportive immune system to cure the patients. The patients who have very weak immune system face the danger of not being cured. Therefore, a reliable solution is to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Concluding Statement
Therefore, although medicine is important in preventing deadly diseases, we still need to have a healthy lifestyle in order for it to be effective
In conclusion, while medicine can be one important factor, lifestyle clearly plays a more important role in having a good mental and physical health. Also, since the lifestyle solves the health problems from the grassroots level, the solution are more long lasting than that of medicines. Some illnesses also cannot be cured by medicine and only by having a healthy lifestyle can we prevent it.
On the other hand, some diseases can only be prevented by medicine, however, it would not be effective without a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, why should we spend money on expensive medical treatments when many illnesses can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, it has rightly been said that the key to good health is lifestyle, rather than medicine.
