I selected this job becaue I really love animals. I think I would enjoy taking care of animals, I wouldn t do this job for the pay I would do it to learn more about animals, and because I love animals. If there is a hurt animal in the community, I might be able to help it and show others how to care for the animal. If someone wanted to know more about an animal, I can either tell them about the animal, or I can tell them where to get information about the animal.

The more we care for animals, the better the world can be.

Zoologist, also called Animal Caretakers and Keepers are responsible for the welfare of animals in kennels, zoos, animal hospitals, aquariums, verterinary facilities and laboratories. They feed, watter, bathe, groom, and exercise the animals. They move animals to other quarters, when necessary. They record information about the animals, such as diet, weight, medication, food intake, and any visible signs of illness.

They may treat minor aliments. They may work under the direction of Veterinary techniqians, Animal Health technicians, Veterinarians, or facilities supervisors.

You must be able to repair, clean, and disinfect animal cages and pens. They adjust controls to regulate temperature and humidity in the area where animals are kept. Zoologists study animal life. They study the development, origin, structure, heredity, classification, population, physiology, ecology, disease, and behavior of animals.

Most of the time, they study the functiom, process, and structure of a particular animal.

The duties of zoologists vary widely. It can vary from assisting in field studies to computer programming to DNA and RNA studies and genetic manipulations to biochemical analysis as well as collection and identification of insects. Some zoologists are involved in basic or applied teaching, writing, research, consultation, or administration. The job of a zoologist depends on the area in which they specialize.

Personal requirements for the job. Personal characteristics are abilities that may be natural. These abilities can be improved through use:

1. You must have the ability to move from one task to another often using a variety of skills.
2. Have the ability to make decisions and take action based on experience. These can be critical descriptions that may affect the animal s life.
3. You should have good manual and finger dexterity. Eye-hand coordination.
4. You should also have the ability to respond to the requests of others and answer questions, sometimes these questions can be critical.
5. You need to have good notetaking to record animal behavior, you need to be able to make decisions that best suit the animals s needs.
6. Caretakers must have use of hands, arms, and fingers to handle animals and other materials.
7. You must be able to reach and endure some physical activity. You should be able to life and carry 25 to 50 pounds, to carry animals and supplies.
8. You must have good or correctable vision, to ensure that you keep care of animals to the best of your ability.
9. Work Conditions, and environment.
10. Work is generally indoors or under shelters, although some pens or cages may be outside.
11. Work week often includes weekends and holidays.
12. Workers may be exposed to strong odors from animals, medical preparations, and disinfectants.
13. There is always the posibilitiy of being injured by an animal.

Skills needed for the job. A skill is a goal directed behavior that can be strenthened through practice:

1. Familiarity with a variety of animal species.
2. Knowledge of animal behavior and habits.
3. Knowledge of the general principles of sanitation and anmial hygience.
4. Willingness to follow a daily maintenance routine.
5. Ability to keep accurate feeding and medical treatment records.
6. Ability to detect signs of illness and disease.
7. Ability to collect blood, uring and fecal samples.
8. Ability to perform common laboratory procedures.
9. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

By 2006 12,000 animal caretakers are projected to be employed with 2,830 openings due to separations and 1680 due to growth over the ten year period 1996-2006. You may be able to fine work in zoos, pet shops, verterniary hospitals, animal research centers, biological laboratories, animal experiment stations, stables, kennels, humane societies, educational institutions, and state, county, and federal governments.

I think that being a Zoologist would take a lot of my time. I also think that if I became one it would give me the satisfaction of knowing that I helped an animal and might have made a difference.
