Community service is a very important aspect in life, at least to me, Not only are you giving back to your community, but you can also learn life lessons. For example, you can learn how to build your self-esteem by making others happy, and by contributing to the community. You can also learn to not judge a book by its cover. Usually, we make assumptions by what we see on the outside, but from volunteering I’ve learned that it’s not about what you see on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that matters.
When you are thinking about what you’re doing, it comes from the heart and it makes the experience 10 times better. When you’re doing something just for school you don’t experience and learn as much as you could’ve because its more forced, and you’re only doing it for a grade.
As Margaret Mead once said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world, Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”.
Little things can impact the world tremendously. There has been many occasions where small groups have made a big change, for example, The Harlem Renaissance. It took a small group of determined African Americans to make a change that impacted the world heavily, it made people more accepting of African Americans, and it made African Americans value their African heritage and not just their American part. Doing small things around my community has contributed into making a big change, especially in my eyes, and on the way I view community service.
Being in student government with a small group of friends really shows how true this quote really is.
Over the past year in SGA (Student Government Association), my friends and I have been determined to help out and make a change. We’ve been contributing in every way that we can, and we help out around the school (and outside of school) a lot, Helping out is actually fun, Just knowing that you’re helping your community and the people that are in need is a good feeling. Doing community service for my school is the first time I’ve ever done community service. Before then, I didn’t really care much about it and even my first time volunteering I was only doing it because it was required.
When I actually volunteered at places like nursing homes I learned so much and it changed my view on community service, The people that you meet at places like nursing homes are very unique and if it wasn’t for me volunteering I would’ve never experienced that Now when I do community sen/ice I actually enjoy it, I’m glad I had the opportunity to do community service because I got a chance to see that it should be something that is carried out, and that it is something everyone should at least put a little time and effort into.
