The Importance of Regular Gym Visits

I’m not a fitness guru by any means. I am part of the gym culture because being stronger, healthier and happier can make for a better life. If you walk into the LA Fitness that I go to, you’re generally greeted by a mass group of people, men and women being in their late 20’s to late 40’s. Usually there are more men than women. Most bodybuilding men have shaking hands and dilated pupils and are trying to bench press each other as they palm their crotches in the mirror.

It’s an interesting sight to say the least. I like to sit on the equipment I’m using in between sets to people watch. It’s a fun thing to do in between sets. The music I tend to enjoy in a place such as this often sets a good tone for my inner opinions. I listen to the heaviest most savage music available on Spotify.

Through the years, my exercise regimen has changed from running, to zumba classes, workout machines, and lifting.

After having my daughter, I no longer do killer workouts, like CrossFit, or daredevil sports. It requires effort, and there are days when sleeping in is all too tempting, but it’s all about consistency. I know I’m not getting out of this life alive, but I’d like to feel good until that night when I die peacefully in my sleep.

So how we end up with gym memberships and training centers to begin with? Fitness started vaguely in the 70s with jogging and Jazzercise.

But physical exercise obviously goes back much further than that, to a time where people wouldn’t have thought of it as working out, but a way of life. Centuries and millennia ago, they did not have all the machines and weights and gyms that we have today, and yet they were in better shape than we are. The strength and mobility of cavemen was not developed through structured programs, weights, or schedules, rather the daily, instinctive, necessity driven practice of highly practical, and adaptable movement skills.

Going to the gym on a regular basis has not only made me become healthier, but it acts as entertainment, too, if you can believe that. After observing the atmosphere at the gym, I started to notice people’s quirks and more specifically, their workout attire. Working out is a really personal thing. Think about it, you’re trying to improve the condition of your body. Your body is a personal thing, right? Despite that, women in my gym choose to wear high-end revealing workout gear. I noticed that women who are confident like to show off their physique by wearing revealing clothing that practically looks like body paint. But it sort of amazes me how open people become when they visit the gym.

Aside from the loud clanking weights from the weight machines, have you ever noticed the noise that men make when they are lifting weights? They’re breathing heavy, groaning, yelling a random ‘WOO’ here and there, and counting out loud. It’s really distracting, actually. Only in a gym can a guy lay on a bench lifting a dumbbell while another guy stands over him and says ‘Come on, baby, do it!’ and not have his sexual orientation questioned!

All jokes aside, in general, at the gym I try my best not to come off as rude and do the bare minimum when it comes to interacting with those around me, like a brisk “hey” and a smile to the person working at the front desk. Combine my silence with the fact that I have a mild to moderate case of resting bitch face, especially when there’s a lot on my mind, I don’t exactly give off a friendly or welcoming persona. When I go into the gym, my mindset is to get in and get out. I’m not there to start up a conversation with anyone. I’m usually there for my workout and nothing else. It’s one of the few places you can abandon most social norms and ignore everything around you and make it about you.

In my opinion, women never really want to get hit on at the gym. But this happens so often and I see it happen everytime I go to the gym to the women who happen to wear very revealing clothing. Of course it’s good to look good, but is wearing revealing clothing is an invitation to get approached or hit on at the gym? Women who wear revealing gym attire seem to illicit this sort of attention. Guys then think it’s ok to stare at any woman, which means I generally end up having to dress in t-shirt and sweats in order to draw less attention to myself.
