The Development of the World Bank

Since the establishment of the World Bank in New Hampshire in 1944, it has expanded from a single institution to five closely associated institutions. The World Bank’s mission is based on the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) to bounce back from post-war development. The World Bank’s initial goal was to help rebuild European countries severely affected by World War II. The World Bank then began to focus on Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Later during the 19505 and 1960s, the World Bank began to solely focus on funding infrastructure projects such as electrical grids, irrigation systems, dams, and roads.

The World Bank has further expanded to agricultural, health, educational, and other social investment projects During the 19705 the World Bank began to focus more on poverty alleviation.

Rather than focusing on construction alone, the World Bank began to fund projects that reflected the needs of the people In order to reach the poor directly, the World Bank funded programs such as food production, community development, population, and health and nutrition.

Eventually, by the 19805, the World Bank began to hire experts such as economists, public policy experts, and different scientists.  The World Bank has done many things to help women and children around the world. During the past five years, The World Bank has funded approximately $2.5 billion towards reproductive health in order to increase the number of safe births, postnatal care, and family planning services to poor women around the world.

In 2015, the World Bank funded $264 million from the International Development Association to the Lao PDR Health Governance and Nutrition Development Project The Health Governance and Nutrition Development Project was wimed to help increase coverage for things such as reproductive medicine, maternal care for mothers and children, and nutritional services of Lao PDR.
