The Benefit Gained From A Time Off Social Media

I received my first phone was when I was in middle school, After begging my parents for months they finally agreed that I “needed” one for emergencies and to contact me after schooli Ever since then, I have been completely attached I was so scared for this assignment because I can’t remember the last time I even went two hours without my phone, let alone all digital media. To make this a little easier I spent the day with my best friend to make sure I don’t go crazy.

Even though I felt disconnected and absent-minded, spending the uninterrupted Lime with my friend strengthened our relationship, Not using digital media gave me an anxious feeling of disconnectedness. Often times, I rely on my phone for updates on my friends, family, and coworkers Without my phone, I was afraid of missing out on exciting events that may have been unfolding. In addition, I was afraid that my coworkers or a peer would need to get ahold of me by means of digital media.

Not only that, but I didn’t have access to social media where I routinely check on my friends throughout my day.

After high school a lot of my friends moved away, and a way to passively keep up with them was through social media, Including my friend since middle school moved to Arizona, and my ex-boyfriend moved to Oregon Digital media has bridged the gap of physical distance between us, which helps me keep these relationships strong, Without digital media, it felt like they didn‘t exist even though these two people are my closest friends.

An unexpected effect of this project on me was the forgetfulness that I felt, I did not realize the immense dependency I have on my phone and digital media for my calendar, schedule, and reminders. I use Google Calendars for most of my work and school functions, so I had to prepare for this activity by writing down my daily schedule and to-do list manually. Even still, I had a weird feeling that somehow something would change without my knowing. Overall, I had a lot of anxiety especially when it came to homework.

When doing my homework, I was afraid that I would miss something on a syllabus because I couldn’t check them I had to rely on my own memory, and it made me feel really inferior to not be able to recall most or any of the information from the syllabi even though I check them so frequently This project made me realize how little I actually focus on remembering information. I’m very used to the access to digital media, and I think I take it for granted that I can just go check media sources and I don’t even think about actually memorizing the information for later use. Despite the negative outcomes from this activity, it actually did wonders for my friendship with my best friend Sam. She thought it was interesting I was doing this project and wanted to test it out for herself. To make sure we didn’t get too bored we planned out our day the day before. We spent the day in Julian, and rode horses for the first time. This usually wouldn’t be my first choice for a girls day out, but it was a unique way to get out of the house without using any electronics We didn’t plan on having an hour long car ride without music.

However, we spent the time together having a deep conversation. In particular, a recent breakup happened in my life and normally I am a little more reserved but I really opened up without having any distractions. This was an unanticipated effect of the activity, but I am so glad that it happened. It was pretty coincidental that I happened to get dumped just before this activity, but because of that I was forced to actually talk out my feelings. My friendship with Sam grew a lot stronger and it felt much more rewarding to be comforted in real life rather than a text message. I felt like she genuinely cared about how I was feeling, and that I could communicate more effectively in person which is obvious, but I hadn’t really noticed until now. Not everything in life can be handled over the Internet, and as innovative as we are with technology in the modern age, I don‘t think it will surpass the communicative rewards from speaking to a close friend in person with no buffering or BRBs. Once we got to the ranch, I really wanted to take pictures with the horses but I was reminded I couldn’t. That was another disadvantage of this project, I didn‘t feel the need to share the photo but I wanted the pictures for myself to remember the first time I rode a horse, Once we were on the horses though we weren’t even allowed to have our phones, so that was easy.

After the ride we went into the town of Julian to get pier I didn’t realize though how much others and I hide behind our phones, While in line, everyone was glued to their phone and I felt awkward just standing there I feel like phones even if it takes us away from talking, between friends it can start conversations. For example, while looking through Instagram I would normally start a conversation about a particular person based on what they posted that day. Instead, I felt like we ran out of topics to talk about On the other hand, it felt nice to have someone’s undivided attention After we got over the awkwardness of the line, it was eye opening to see the couples in tables around us that didn’t even look up from their phones to talk to one another, I felt respected that my friend took the time to give her undivided attention and just spend time with me, To conclude, I feel that this activity was a really important part of my life at the moment because although I felt disconnected and forgetful, I strengthened a friendship and learned some valuable lessons about my own abilities. I think this activity taught me most that I should challenge my own memory more.
