The Nation Training Center (NTC) which is in the Mojave Desert in the state of California has been a well-known battle ground for combine arms forces. Units across the country utilize the battle space and its open range of land to simulate warfare from middle east to southern America. The purpose of NTC is to not only prepare ready deployable units for combat operations but to give all combine forces the real-world experience by physically and mentally prepare them for any and all out comes whether it be hostile or non-hostile that they may face.
Units can conduct training operations such as route clearance/ reconnaissance to Counterinsurgency (COIN) operations from Civil Affairs, Military Intelligence to a complete battle staff operation. The National Training Center provides all the critical elements for preparation to a combat environment, but The National Training center has a key factor towards success on the battle filed.
When a battle staff come together, they have the intent to accomplish many objectives.
One of the main objectives is the accomplishment of the mission and the safe well fare of the units. Although the task may sound to be an easy outcome, it is not. What the National training Center has continually proven without a doubt is that not all battles are won by numbers in force but by experience and battle planning development with the ability to be wrong and make the necessary corrections. These factors make NTC a vital and must have training prior to deployment to any battle space.
When units arrive to The National Training Center, they have no experience of the enemy’s capability just as they would not know once arriving to the battle space. The units do not understand the local population activity to include their involvement with any hostile in the area. The units that are station at NTC such as the 1/ 11 and 2/11 Armored Cavalry Regiment have trained with the intent to defeat any and all Rotational Training Unit’s (RTU). The permanent party’s not only hold the advantages of knowing and owning the battle space, but just as the enemy has proven to do during prior war is the permanent party will continue to adapt and change their battle rhythm based on the armed forces engagements patterns and equipment capabilities.
During the RTU stay at NTC they are given intel from prior units that are outbound as they would in a combat environment and must begin planning for any hostel activity. The RTU must always maintain security and stand ready to engage the enemy. They must also defend their forward operations base (FOB) prior to deploying to their Areas of operations (AO). This FOB is known as RUBA and it simulates the initial integration to a combat area along with the mental transformation from a safe area of operations to a combat area of operations. From that point forward all armed forces will be surveillance and identified for any weak points in the combine units’ daily operations as the enemy would do while deployed. If any weak points are identified a plane among the enemy forces is sought out and executed with disregards of any mission success in other terms the enemy does not care to gain any advantage at the time. The objective is to have the RTU react in a tactical and technically manner while also showing force to the enemy with a quick reaction. Although this may seem as an unfair advantage it instills forward planning, reaction time and battle experience. The intent of the NTC Command is to ensure that the training units can identify their weak points and vulnerable areas and toughen them up. In order to defeat the enemy, we must fight and react against the enemy with the knowledge of our strong and weak capabilities. After a week of defending the FOB units will move out to the middle of the dessert known as the BOX and will conduct battle training for the remaining of the time. The training and the execution of it will give division commanders the view of their unit’s readiness. This is the time where all mistakes must be made to strengthen the units Mission essential Task.
The National Training Center critical role to the arms forces is having the ability to fail. Units have the ability train and execute in different ways. They can review all mistakes or advantages the units have and improve forward planning for a battle. The opposing forces (OPFOR) will do the same to counter and defend the battle space. If the RTU has taken all their satisfactory and unsatisfactory battle execution and understand their strengths and weakness along with capabilities of their equipment the only outcome will be success and the accomplishment of the mission with a low casualty rate. Time of war will always have and must call for casualty but the NTC intent is to accomplish the victory with the lowest percentage of equipment and manpower failure. The National Training Center not only provides a wide range of training area but like any and all execution before any mission it allows units to rehearsal, identify any deficiencies. This makes the National Training Center a critical role in all the armed forces and without its capability’s units could not have the real-world experience in preparation to deploying into a hostile environment.
