As an educator, I pride myself in building a rapport with my students. In order to accomplish this task, I try to connect and gain knowledge through my student’s experiences; through ice breakers, surveys, scavenger hunts, and “all about me’s”. These experiences allow one to incorporate current events, student interest pieces, hands on activities, and relatable lessons into the intervention class. I will set a positive example for my students to follow. It is my goal to remain upbeat, positive, open-minded, and consistent while at the same time correcting any detrimental feelings, actions, or thoughts towards this course or its content.
To combat the negative feelings that students may have I will focus on their strengths. One of my goals is to shift their negative thoughts to a feeling of empowerment. I will implement a positive reinforcement system and acknowledge their strengths and build on their weaknesses. Students will receive praise and rewards for their successes no matter how big or small.
Also, I will allow the students to take mini breaks whenever they are showing signs of frustration. Since it is imperative to stay in constant communication with the parents or guardians, I will acknowledge positive behavior and call their parents or send positive notes home. In my opinion, parental contact is pivotal because parents can help enforce the objectives taught at school. Therefore, keeping a consistent balance between home and school.
One of the greatest challenges when dealing with negative attitudes is motivating the unmotivated, because negative people tend to gravitate towards other negative people.
Be honest about what this course is designed for and make clear how this is beneficial to their lives. Explain that this class is not a punishment, it is to help with their future endeavors. Another way to change negative perceptions is to connect and make the learning relevant. For example, when teaching The Crucible, connect it to The Salem With Trials depiction in pop culture, which is The Vampire Diaries. For recitation, “Our Deepest Fear”, refer students to the Coach Carter movie by discussing and overcoming fears. Prayerfully, the students will be able to take what they have learned and apply it to real world situations.
My teaching style will reflect a positive learning environment. All students will have an opportunity to be successful at their level and reach their full potential. I will not only be an educator, but a role model and mentor as well. I will be open to parental involvement. I will seek help when necessary. I will make sure that what I am doing aligns with the guidelines and procedures that the school has set in place. I will attend workshops and conferences and continue to grow professionally.
