Problems That are in The Global Health Community

Provide an overall summary of your original proposal. What global health issues did you value, and how did you plan to address them? My original proposal consisted of a few vague ideas that needed to be developed more thoroughly. I wanted to address small issues that I sat first and then work my way up to bigger problems I see in our global health community. Some priorities that I valued were to try and take care of improving the knowledge given to patients of what kind of care they are receiving.

My idea to try and address this issue was to improve the way patients were given their own information so they knew exactly what was being tested and how a doctor was going to fix it. Another priority was to focus on primary care given to patients. I vaguely stated I wanted to make routine checkups just as valued as more serious visits. Another priority that I wanted to address in my first outline was to spread more knowledge on the basics of taking care of yourself.

Basically, I wanted to enforce healthy habits in our society. I also wanted to budget money towards innovation and hopefully encourage more creativity. My last priority I mentioned was to limit small errors in communication. Although my priorities were sensible, I didn’t do a good job in supporting the ideas and therefore I didn’t outline a plan to address the problems.  Considering what you have learned throughout this course, what were the strengths and weaknesses of your original proposal?  After participating longer in this course, I have learned several valuable things surrounding our global health.

The knowledge that I have gained has allowed me to be able to criticize my first outline more deeply.

I believe that my only strength to my original outline was that I wanted to focus on small issues that could better support bigger problem sin our health care system. Issues like focusing on primary care and showing it just as much support as bigger medical problems. Also issues as small as knowledge for patients not being readily available. I believed that these things are small issues within our global health plan that can be adjusted. I had several weaknesses in my original plan. I was very vague and didn’t lay out concrete support with ways I wanted to accomplish my goals. I needed to state how I wanted to actually carry out my plan.  Now that you have taken this course, a) how would you change your original proposal and b) why should your proposal change? Include evidence support from course materials (readings lectures  videos) that come from at least 3 separate modules to back up your new ideas or support your initial proposal.

I would change by original proposal by including more in-depth responses on what my priorities would be. Furthermore, I would want to support my proposals with ways on how I would approach trying to make them happen. When I stated my priorities in my original proposing I vaguely stated ideas that were too similar, and I failed to support the ideas with a detailed plan to accomplish them. Another priority that I would have incorporated would be a statement on injustice in the workplace. I believe that this an issue among patients still today where they may not be treated as well as they should. Examples of this are turning away patients that are not able to afford the treatment. Another example of this is the weight stigma that appears in healthcare settings. I would incorporate a policy where no patients get turned away.

From Module 4, we learned a term called,” structural violence,” coined by Johan Galtung. This term means that social structures that may stop individuals, groups and societies from reaching their full potential. The readings that came from this module states that patients that are part of lower tiers of society, they often receive lesser care. Also, in Module 4, we read about the weight stigma in our society that leads to discrimination. Even in the healthcare setting we see negative attitudes towards obese patients. In,” Understanding the Stigma of Obesity and its Consequences,” we read that obese patients sometimes delay care and cancel medical appointments. Although these patients are in ill health, they still need to feel that they can come in for help and advice.

When I read ahead to Module 7, I read,” The Right to Health.” This fact sheet clearly states the right to health means,” governments must generate conditions in which everyone can be as healthy as possible.” This is a great piece of evidence for what I find to be my biggest priority. This treaty is the core values to what should be our health care systems values. Acts still must take place to ensure the core values of this reading is out into place. Individuals and international assistance is required to have maximum success. During this course we also read a book entitled,” The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” This book discussed many ethical issues regarding not treating patients correctly or fairly. This book tells us that back then patients felt disempowered based on their race and they were not treated like a patient should. Still today we can find stories similar where sociality factors can make a patient feel disempowered.

This is just another example of how we must strive for change in the health care world to provide treatment to everyone. What limitations of your new plan do you need to consider?  One limitation that I see coming up within my plan is that not all healthcare professionals will comply with,” The Right to Health.” In the article it states,” it is important to distinguish the inability from the unwillingness of a State Party to comply with its right to health obligations.” This a problem that will have to be solved with positive steps to realize that the,” Right to Health,” needs to be fulfilled. What are some specific ethical or justice issues that may be associated with your proposal? A justice issues that may arise is the unfairness still present among treatments for patients. Each person is different, but we still have to come together to complete and larger goal of basic human rights for healthcare coverage. Please provide a Reference List in APA format.
