The Evolution of the Drug and Arms Trade in the Global Community

The drug and arms trade are both complex systems that have continuously grown year after year. Drugs are traded around the globe both legally and illegally. The arms trade itself is worth an estimated 80 billion dollars globally. Trading ranges from ammunition to weapons of tad destruction. With the increase of sales from this system we have seen a massive increase in armed violence deaths. The global community has come together to try and address this global issue and has made some progress.

The idea of gun control laws has been thrown around over the past few years. Politicians remain divided in the creation of these new laws. In 2014, the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) was created, “regulating the international trade in conventional arms – from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships” (UN.org). Civilians around the world are also caught in the crossfire. Not only are they the ones killed due to armed violence, but they too are included in the 80-billion-dollar system.

Anyone is subject and able to purchase weapons for whatever reason they seem fit. This has led to increase of mass shootings in the United States and other instances around the world. The drug trade is another issue in itself. Not only is it dangerous, but most of it is illegal. Its harmful to the users and the suppliers. The United States enacted the War on Drugs in 1971. President and First Lady Nixon campaigned nonstop for this issue. They declared that they will not stop until the war has been won.

With the enaction of this policy, everyone felt the need to contribute. Police officers and politicians everywhere did not slow down or show mercy when it came to drugs. Additionally, over the last few decades drug trade has increased although new laws and procedures were enforced. The multi-billion-dollar business has a different connotation to it compared to the arms trade. The community has come together to try and reduce the use and transportation as much as possible. With the D.A.R.E. organizations and other like it, community leaders started in the schools and tried to instill essential values into the children. These controversial global systems both hinder and somewhat elevate the global community. Minus the economic value it adds, are these trades beneficial to the global community. Whether it does or not, it ultimately forces us to act as a unit to come together and work to solve our problems.
