William Shakespeare was alive at a time that was very different from today. At that time, people were judged in society by gender, race, or status. Today everyone is equal, regardless of religion, gender, etc. We are all equal because we are all human. Although Shakespeare lived in a different time, he still had the same worldview that many of us share today. Reading Shakespeare’s plays, at first it was difficult for me to understand what his worldview was. I could not determine if he was really an anti-Semite, although it was obvious that most of the people were anti-Semite.
However, many of the women he wrote about were extremely powerful characters, especially for that time period. This led me to the conclusion that he believed that men and women should be equal. His worldview was that gender should not determine status, intelligence, or anything else. For example, in the play The Merchant of Venice, Portia was really strong and surpassed many male characters.
She disguised herself as a disguise and deceived the entire courtroom; Shakespeare wrote the play in such a way that it was Portia who made the final decision.
I agree with William’s worldview that women can be as strong as men. I think that both men and women are capable of achieving the same success in everything they do. In Shakespeare’s time, women were not allowed to perform on stage, so men played female roles in his plays.
My high school drama teacher said that Shakespeare would have actresses in his plays if he was allowed to.
I admire William Shakespeare for many reasons, and this is just one of them. I was surprised when I found out that this is how he looked at the world.
