My Top 3 Cars: Corolla, Fusion, HR-V

Purchasing a car has become a normal event in life. Most of us purchase one at some point or another. My aunt has just gifted her favorite niece $25,000 to buy a new car. She’s been from dealership to dealership all throughout the town and beyond, and has narrowed her choices down to the 2016 Toyota Corolla, the 2016 Ford Fusion, and the 2016 Honda HR-V. She’s asked me, the apparently unfavored nephew, to determine the best choice of the three finalists The Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan that has been part of Toyota’s production lineup since 1964, although usually features two doors in its earlier generations This year‘s model received an 8.

6/10 overall by Kelley Blue Book experts as well as an 87/10 for value. The MSRF for the 2016 Corolla starts at $18,065 according to Kelley Blue Book All variants of this year’s Corolla house a 1.8 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that produces 140 horsepower and gets twenty-eight to twenty-nine miles per gallon of gas in the city, depending on which version you buy.

The Corolla also gets thirty seven to thirty eight miles per gallon on the highway. To compete with rival vehicles like the Chevrolet Cruze; Ford Focus; and Mazda 3, the Corolla has been equipped with standard features including LED headlights, height adjustable seats, iPod connectivity via USB, 6 speaker sound system, and 8 airbags with a crash safety rating of 5/3 The 2016 Corolla interior looks straight out of the latest Audi or Mercedes-Benz, and according to Kelley Blue Book, has record holding legroom (Traiongo, 1).

Unlike the compact Corolla, the Ford Fusion is a full size sedanr It was first introduced by Ford in 2006 and it is considerably larger and heavier than the Corolla. Kelley Blue Book gives the 2016 Fusion an overall rating of 85/10 as well as a 9.2/10 for interior and design. Despite its somewhat muscle car like appearance, the Fusion only houses a 2.5 liter inline 4 cylinder engine.

The Fusion’s engine is more powerful than the Corolla’s at the price of having less gas milage. The Ford produces 175 horsepower and gets twenty two miles per gallon of gas in the city and thirty four miles per gallon on the highway. Ford jumped on the eco-train with the Fusion by creating a hybrid variant that gets an extra twenty horsepower and ten miles to the gallon on a full battery charge. Kelley Blue Book describes the hybrid Ford Fusion as “on par with its competitors” The Ford Fusion’s starting price is $23,000. It also earned a crash test safety rating of five stars. Unlike the Corolla and the Fusion which are compact and full size sedans, Honda’s new HR-V is a three door compact SUV, It looks like the love child of the Honda Fit and the Honda CR-V Not to say that it’s ugly. The HR»V is very sporty for a compact SUV and possesses a balance of both the Fit and CR-V’s best features.

Anatomically, it really is a cross between the two The HR»V’s starting price is $20,000 Additionally, Kelley Blue Book gave the HR-V an 8.9/10 overall rating and number one in it’s class in fuel economy, It also earned a crash test safety rating of 5 stars The Honda l-lR-V has one available engine and doesn’t come with any upgradable versions unlike the Corolla and the Fusion. It‘s an inline 4 cylinder engine and gets up to 27 miles per gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway and produces 148 horsepower. Unlike the Corolla and the Fusion, which are only available in FR drivetrains (front engine and rear wheel drive) the HR-V has two drivetrains to choose from, both having a front mounted engine of course. The HRAV is available in front wheel drive as most Hondas always have been, and AWD (all wheel drive), which is the most stable drivetrain when it comes to overall handling ability and tire stress.

The HR-V comes with a nice set of standard features as well. According to Kelley Blue Book, the base model HR-V includes a rearview camera, bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, four-speaker sound system, and auxiliary and USB ports, The HR—V’s interior also features flip up seat cushions, flat folding seatbacks, and 60 square feet of overall space (Degen, 1). When the Toyota Corolla, Honda HR-V, and Ford Fusion are placed side by side the differences start to become more clear. They do all come to a draw at a 5 star crash test safety rating, but the Corolla has the cheapest MSRP and the highest fuel economy despite the HR-V being number one in its class. The HR~V has the highest overall Kelley Blue Book rating and the most driving stability, with the Fusion having the least due to its wheelbase being longer than the Corolla’s. The Fusion also holds the most expensive MSRP and is the heaviest of the three.

This is the point where I would pull a lever or push a button and the trap door under the Ford Fusion would open, letting the sedan fall into some dark pit of oblivion. The Corolla is smaller and more nimble than the HR-V, but being rear wheel drive it will put more stress on the tires than the HR—V’s all-wheel drive at the advantage of having better fuel usage The all-wheel drive version of the HR-V is being referred to due to the AWD drive-train’s superior stability, handling, and weight balance over the FF (Front engine and front-wheel drive) drivetrain. Some of the HR» V’s standard features are a bit less “for fun” and assist more in the overall function of the car as far as space usage and safety. Plus, the remaining features are for the most part, the same as the Corollas.

I won’t open up the floor under the Corolla and banish it to eternal darkness, I personally would probably go for the Corolla due to my personal preference for small, nimble Japanese cars like Mazda Miatas, Subaru Imprezas, and Nissan Silvia to name some higher end examples. Since the goal was to analyze the Fusion, HR-V and Corolla and pick a better choice for my sister I‘m gonna have to recommend the best all-around daily driver. The HR-V would probably be better for road trips, going to Wal-Mart, and driving the future family around. Therefore, against my own personal preference, I’d recommend that my sister go down to Holler Honda or some nearby dealership and check the HR-V’s out that they have in stock. The HR-V gets my recommendation and a hypothetical gold medal. I’ll give the Corolla a silver medal and an “I still love you” note.
