Live Student Concert Report

Live Concert Report On Tuesday, October 23, my friends and I attended a student recital performed by KerriAnn Freeland playing the flute, and Lillian Pearson assisting with the piano. There was also a second person aiding performer, Pearson, with the piano. I have never been to a student recital before, so I came in completely unaware of what it was going to be like. I originally thought that my experience was only for a grade in a class, but I was actually entertained by some of the songs played on the flute and piano.

Musical Piece Composer Year Andante Pastorale Paul Traffanel 1844-1908 Sonatina I. Allegretto grazioso II. Andantino sognando III. Allegro giocoso quasi fandango Eldin Burton 1913-1979 The musical performance was in a small concert hall in the Coulter Building.

I had a hard time finding the concert hall at first because I had never been on the second floor before. I was handed a blue piece of paper when I walked in that gave me information about the performance I was going to watch.

The concert hall was a pretty basic theater that I’ve seen in high school with baffles against the walls that made it easier for the audience to hear KerriAnn Freeland playing the flute. The stage was very plain but professional with nothing but a grand piano in the center for two people to play a melody alongside the flute.

It did not seem like much of a serious performance, not because of the performers themselves but because of the crowd that seemed to be filled with only students who swiped their cards in a scanner before they left the concert hall.

I really enjoyed the musical pieces that were played. The last song contained dynamics like very high notes played very fast, known as allegro. It leaped from those high notes to low, slow notes that gave the music a more depressing mood. The tone color of the flute made the fast notes sound similar to tweeting of birds, which may not have been the goal but it made me feel joyful.

While I did like the songs that were played, I did not like the piano accompaniment because I felt like it took my attention away from the lighthearted melody of the flute. If it were quieter than the flute, I may have appreciated it more, but it made me feel like there was too much going on at once to have both of them playing at the same time. I also was not expecting for the performance to be so short.

I went to the concert hall with the expectation that I would be there from 7:30 until 8:30 when it realistically lasted 25 minutes. Paul Taffanel was a composer from France who wanted to rival against the strings by creating a more collected sound. Traffanel was not only a well-respected flute player, but he also took action in areas like teaching and performing.

Today he is known as the “father of the modern French School of flute playing” because of accomplishments like being a “virtuosic soloist”, an “exceptional orchestral player at the Société des concerts du Conservatoire and the Paris Opéra” and for getting “appointed to the Examining Board for Instrumental Studies at the Conservatoire” and “was also a founding member of the National Music Society and composed a prize-winning wind quintet” making him a very well-remembered musical artist (Gaudry).

Throughout this time Taffanel strived to convince wind players to practice on their skills in order to perform music in groups that was made solely for winds. One of his later achievements includes the introduction of a style of music called “HarmonieMusik” that included “oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns…a flute and piano” (Gaudry). I would consider going to another musical performance, but I would rather experience other genres of musical performance, like Opera. I have never seen an opera in person but would love to view their talent because I am more interested in how people use their own voices to create music than I am in instruments.

I enjoyed the student recital for the most part, but there were small things I did not like as much. Because of that I would tell my friends to attend a live concert like this only if I know they have an interest in that type of music. In the future I am going to look into the musical performances I go to, so I can make a judgment on what the most entertaining option seems like it would be.
