High Costs: Food Waste

By just reducing food waste, one can annually save much more money rather than shop binging. Shopping smarter doesn’t cost much than it would be to throw out hundreds of food worth into the trash can. In the article “Curbing Food Waste Is Good for Business. The Environment, and Society”, by Dave Lewis, he states that ”the report shows that almost every time a business made an investment in curbing food waste, there was a positive return on that investment”.

Businesses cannot do all the work, they expect people to take action into their spending as well. There also comes a great advantage for businesses or corporations into taking such action, and that is money. But if that’s what it takes to reduce food waste, then so be it, in order to maintain a more prosperous environment.

“There’s no one size-fits-all approach, so what we needs to be done will vary in developing countries, tackling food losses during production, handling and storage is critically important”.

As much as countries are trying to get involved in this movement, not many are lucky to even have the excess of food. In the article “Food Waste”,“According to ReFED, retailers can prevent 571,000 tons of food waste and save $1.3 billion annually by implementing waste tracking and analysis systems”. Not only can food waste prevent billions of dollars but, it can save natural resources by reducing things such as water, land and fossil fuel. The reduction of food would not only reduce landfill waste, but also reduce spending that can be incorporated into other programs or organizations that also need help.

A hungry America is begging for food within its own people and many do not know about it. It is a totally shocking fact that comes from the country that has it all. “A contributing factor to the problem of hunger is that 63 million tons of food-or around 40 percent of the total produced in the United States- goes uneaten each year”. About half of food that someones gets from their plate, is being wasted without being touched coming from U.S. alone. The United States is not the only country to blame for wasting food, tons of it gather up every year from other countries resulting as a global issue. It can be said that the food being thrown out from the U.S. can feed other people around the world, including its own people,“as reported by the nonprofit organization Feeding America, 13 percent of American Households experienced food insecurity in 2015, meaning that 42 million people lacked the resources to acquire sufficient food to meet their nutritional needs on a consistent basis”.

The U.S. faces a lot of food insecurity from which many programs like WIC or Feeding America, have grown over the years. Food insecurity is mainly based on those who struggle to obtain the proper need of nutrients, which many people struggle with everyday, including the middle class group. Food waste brings many consequences like “Throwing away food wastes all of the energy, water, and resources needed to grow it, ship it and sell it”. Society has this fear of not having enough options to pick from, especially when it comes to food. Natural resources are often wasted in order to create produce which 40% of the time is being thrown out. Restaurants often have this issue due to their consumer demand that they need to have in order to stay in business. Nothing but warning is done in order to have a dramatic change and evolution to reduce food waste.

Landfills are increasing every year and will keep doing so if there is nothing to prevent it, “Food makes up the largest percentage of landfilled municipal solid waste (MSW) in the United States, accounting for nearly 22 percent of the total in 2014”. Food in the landfills create so much carbon dioxide that accumulate and even affect the climate due to their intensity into the atmosphere Not only is it causing an effect into the environment ,but it is also affecting society due to the high demand in consumerism. Demanding for food seems easy ,but “Producing food requires extensive use of natural resources such as land, water and fossil fuels”(Food Waste 9). Natural resources are meant to be used for the necessary production of things that people find imperative to live by.

Food wastes many of these resources in order to achieve a never ending choice making. Organic based communities prefer people to farm their own produce, they believe that it will be an eye opener to truly see how much effort is put into making these products, and even spending to spread the word out. “In the article “Garbage” in Galegroup, the reference states that, “Composting is a waste management approach that relies on heat and microorganisms-mostly bacteria and fungi-decompose yard wastes and food scraps, turning them into nutrient rich mix called humus or compost”(Garbage 5). Food is not only a meal for humanity to eat, it is part of the earth and the beauty of its production given to people as a gift. People often take that for granted, the fact that food can compose itself to feed the earth itself is fascinating as well.
