Flags Of Our Fathers

The film Flags of Our Fathers described an important historical time period. It is an iconic picture of American patriotism, depicting the six men raising the flag over Iwo Jima during World War II. This event inspired the bestselling book by James Bradley, and then inspired the movie “Flags of Our Fathers”. The movie was released in 2006, and was based on the bestseller book by James Bradley. The film described the famous flag raising on Battle of Iwo Jima, where five Marines and one Navy corpsman were involved in raising the flag on Iwo Jima and how that event affected their individual lives.

Flags of Our Fathers intertwines two stories. The film has scene shifts between the action on Iwo Jima battle and the experiences on the three surviving corpsman.

The story of the iconic picture of the three surviving men raising the American flag is a blend of irony and suspension. The irony of the image is that the six men are showing the hope and heroism of raising the American flag, and became a symbol of the sacrifices of American troops.

On the other hand, the picture shows the Marine Corps defending the flag for many years against accusations that the picture was staged and some of the men were misidentified. There is many controversies over the historical accuracy of this film, as well as, the book. The depiction of the scenes in the movie were very accurate on what the battle appeared looked like along with how some of the main characters died realistically.

Although the movie depicted the scenes very well, there were some missing pieces from the story of the Iwo Jima.

The movie depicts the patriotic scene of the three surviving men to be the heroic ones when raising the American flag in the Iwo Jima battle. That scene created a lot of controversial issues between the public, because the movie makes it appear that the only heroic ones are the ones alive and raising the flag. But some of the public believe the true heros are the ones that died trying to save America, and help the three surviving men get to raise the flag. Most of the public just wanted the ones that died trying to save our country to be known with the iconic photograph. Criticizing the heroic worship was the first historical accuracy issue in this movie. The movie also, requests that if the trio does not give their all, the government will end up going bankrupt and the war will be lost. Also, the authors claim that the public is tired of the war and needs to feel assured that the war will end soon.

These ideas are not accurate and can fool a modern audience. In reality, the public was definitely not tired of the war, but certainly not contemplating giving up when everyone could see the light at the end of the tunnel. A passage from the Foner Give Me Liberty textbook relates to the idea that of misleading people in believing in ideas that aren’t accurately true. The passage of the Propaganda War talks about the same ideas that occured in this movie. During the Civil War, the “Loyal Publication Society and others tried to mobilize the pro war public opinion. But the Wilson administration decided that patriotism was too important to leave to the private sector”. This describes the same idea of misleading people to believe in only the pro war opinion through propaganda.

This relates to “Flags of our Founding Fathers” because the authors left out missing pieces and add different scenes that didn’t occur. Overall, this is a well known movie that depicts a very important time period. This movie accurately represents an important military event that the whole public should know about. The movie is controversial and may be criticizing hero worship, but many of the men were real heros and deserve to be known. “The Flags of our Founding Fathers” by Clint Eastwood was a very interesting movie that I have not seen before and I enjoyed getting more familiar with the iconic flag raising photograph.
