Essay Thanks for Being Here And Listening

Hello. Most of you probably know me by now, but for those of you who don’t my name is Christine. I’d like to thank you for being here and listening to me speak even though I know you’re a captive audience and you don’t have a choice. So, with that out of the way, I’d like to start with a quote which some of you may be familiar with. It’s by Jerry Seinfeld and he says “Speaking in front of a crowd is considered the number one fear of the average person.

Number two was death. Death was number two? This means to the average person, that if you go to be at a funeral, you would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy.”

But I say to you what Arvee Robinson says to her students when she’s teaching them to be good speakers: “Feel the fear of public speaking and do it anyway.

” Being fearless isn’t about a lack of fear. It’s about taking that fear and transforming it into excitement and energy around your message. It’s like stumbling on a small fire in the woods. You could either look at the fire and say “hey, that’ll probably burn something or hurt someone if I leave it. I should put that out.” In which case, crisis averted—you’ve saved the forest and all the animals living in it. But you know what would be even better? You take the fire and control it—stick a barbecue on top of it or roast a marshmallow and turn it into something useful for yourself.

In a similar way, your fire as a speaker, if used correctly, could inspire your audience. It’s from that fire that you’ll get the deeply confident public speaking ability that you want, rather than the superficial confidence that comes with just ‘managing’ your nerves and speaking around them. You can’t give in to your fear or run away from situations that trigger it (like public speaking). If you do, the result is always going to be lost opportunities. Public speaking is one of the most useful soft skills you can possess in any job, in any industry. If you can learn to communicate well, you will set yourself apart from others in a good way. So, you should reframe your way of thinking to see public speaking as an opportunity rather than a fearful and unpleasant experience. You may never love public speaking, but you can at least make it something that’s positive.
