After concluding my field experiences at Navy Elementary School, I felt that creating the lesson plans or curriculum is more interest to me. While observing the classroom, I see the difference and similarities between my present cooperative teacher and the past teacher such as classroom arrangement, management, and lesson styles. Throughout of the field experiences, I had able to learn about the teaching profession as a whole and solving the sudden issues. As I end up with my field hours, I observe the classroom arrangement, curriculum activities, modification of who needs, an adaption of technology and specific management behavior.
All of the students spend more time in sitting in a classroom and the place where they will learn various skills and contents. Each teacher has a variety of classroom setting and arrangement. It is important that the teacher provides the safe and comfortable classroom environment to the student because they develop their academic success and knowledge of the skills need to reach the goal.
Having effective classroom arrangement maximize the opportunities for a student’s learning and govern their behavior. In order to make more visually, my field teacher decorates the wall within the science or social study, writer’s workshop or math monthly contents. The class had their own pets, which is turtle and design to bring a natural life into class and attract student’s interest. To provide the comfortable environment to students, the teacher provides the carpet area, small library area that the students lay down and read the book, small group area on the back of the room, computer zone, and have whiteboard and smart-board in front of the classroom.
There were 6 desks in a group align in a row within the classroom.
The interesting curriculum lesson in the field is taking film video for each group. Each group had to write the scripts for specific topics that relate to the social study contents. As they come up with the script for each group, they build the positive relationship with their group member and could practice to becoming a leader of follows in a group. Throughout of the group work, the students could learn how the groups function productively. Each of the members had responded to have jobs for making the film. While working with a group, they interact each other on the video and learn how to support each other and learn how to deliver his or her ideas during the activities they also can learn how to work with others. The group work helps the students to learn how to work with people outside their circle of friends and even learn how to work with students who disagree with them. The Self-confidence gives each student to develop a high level of passion and empathy in the individual. By taking a film in front of the classroom, the students build the confidence more strongly who are the lack of self- confidence or fear of speaking in front of the class. Writing the scripts and working tougher to display student’s knowledge in a creative way are both benefits of filming making in the classroom. It helps to understand, reinforce and review the concepts that they learn the lesson.
By giving the modification to ESL student, it help them to understand the content easier, complete the assignment quickly, improve their English skills and feel included and comfortable to class. My field teacher did not had to provide the visual lesson sheet for her ESL student because, the ESL student who is high level of ESL class. However, she had to check if the student to understnad well after she give out the direction. During the language art, the ESL student get support from the assistive teacher to keep in track for his assignments. As the teacher provide the partner work during the individual reading time, she accommodate the ESL student to work with those students who are more capable with reading. By having partner group, the students Not only the ESL student could improve their English skills but also promote the interaction between other students.
The key to success in the classroom lies in having the appropriate adaptions and modifications made to the instruction is key for the students who are disabilities or diverse learners. My field teacher provides the different learning materials, such as visual or auditory activities for autism students. Also, she repeats the daily routines in the morning to make the students to recognize it. The teacher offers multiple media options to suit each special need student’s specific learning style. As the morning meeting, the teacher gives the autism and ESL students an extra time to share his or her thoughts and opinion on daily questions. The modifications and adaptions need to base on individual needs and his or her personal learning styles and interest.
To assist the students to enhance their success, technology is one of the key components. As the student takes a turn to work on morning work at the computer zone, individual students could access what they are interested in a certain website and explore the different contents. The technology lesson is the ability to provide more engaging activities for students and is an incredibly effective teaching tool. When the teacher introduces the new math contents or reviewing the contents, there are clear that have many benefits of using music as well as incorporating into instruction. The music education in a variety of areas including math skills among others. Throughout the singing the song, it helps to recall the memory and information. The video song is powerful pedagogical tools that enliven a classroom and enhance student learning in an enjoyable manner. Showing the video or listening to the math song is an idea that the creation of a positive and enjoyable atmosphere help to develop a feeling of inclusion for students and had learning value for them. It assists the teacher in the recollection of material what she had been teaching. When students utilized music in learning, positive results occurred in achievement. The math song or video can also improve listening and oral language development, improve attention and memory, and enhance abstract thinking. To increase in attention and listening brought the benefits of music to every subject, as well as helped improve classroom behavior.
After the lunchtime over, there is one of the students had a hard time to participate the class. He usually falls asleep or not pay attention to the lessons even had transitioning time between lunch and new subject time. In order to make him participate, the teacher perceives individual rather than the entire classroom to increase the engagement. It enhances the possibility that the student will address one another by name and direct to comment to another. Also, the teacher decides to work on partner activities or centers to keep students into busy work. So, the students would have fewer chance to get disruptive from others. The teacher can improve her students in the course by devoting time and thought to shape the environment and planning each session.
To enhance the field classroom environment, I suggest working on more physical activities when working on the review activities before the tests or individual work time. My field teacher provides the review time by working on the review worksheet, but I would like to suggest to work on within the classroom such as dragging, puzzling, fill in the blank with using the smart-board. It could increase the participation and easy to catch their attention. Most of the students would like to write on the smart-board. By collaborating with the technology and lessons, the students could reach the highest attention and participation. Family engagement could be another method to enhance the positive environment for the student. As the parent engages in the classroom, the student generally achieves the better grade and attendance. it also has a better self- esteem, more self- discipline and show high aspirations and motivation toward the classroom. Not only the student will earn benefits but also the parents could increase their interaction and discussion with their children and more responsive to their children’s social, emotional, and intellectual developmental need.
The field experience help to explore the reality of the classroom and gain useful information about classroom environment, teaching, and students. I had gain more knowledge of the role and responsibilities that I had to take as a teacher. Due to field experience opportunity, I become more observant and knowledgeable about the younger age students and what it helps them to learn in a positive environment. The teacher motivation and positive behavior of teaching will likely to have a beneficial impact on to the students in academic skills as well as reach goals. It is important that the teacher understands the cause and effects in order to understand how to organize their classroom to create a better learning environment.
