Ted Cruz is a republican member of the senate representing Texas. He has held this position since 2013 and has recently won in the 2018 race for senate against Beto O’rourke. Ted Cruz has solely republican views. He believes in the termination of Obamacare and payroll taxes. These taxes go towards medicare and social security. His position on abortion is pro-life without exception. Cruz would like to put a total end to planned parenthood. In addition to these views he has similar immigration policies to those of trump.
He believes in a border wall being built in Mexico, the deportation of illegal immigrants, decrease in legal immigration, and elimination of birthright citizenship. He supports major tax cuts and as previously stated an end to payroll taxes.
Cruz believes that climate change does not exist and is a strong supporter and endorsee of the NRA. Beto, on the other hand, has almost solely democratic views. He has opposite views on most political matters but as a gun owner himself supports the 2nd amendment.
But, he does believe in thorough background checks and the elimination of weapons of war. I chose Ted Cruz because he has been in the world of politics for a long time. I chose him in particular because he has very different views than I do on most political matters. I enjoy learning about a different perspective and analyzing political views that I may not agree with. It gives me an insight on other opinions and helps me better understand the world of politics as a whole.
The article I chose was Ted Cruz Defeats Beto O’Rourke for Senate in Texas written by Manny Fernandez and presented in the New York Times. It begins with going into detail about the incredibly close race for senate in between Cruz and Beto. In a state which has been widely considered a republican state, it was surprising to see so many independent and republican voters end up voting for Beto. Another factor in Beto’s successful campaign would have been the campaign of Greg Abbott. Abbott is a republican with views similar to those of Cruz. Republicans throughout Texas seemed to split their votes in between the two. Beto raised thirty million dollars more than Cruz for his campaign and in some cases had more people at his rallies. So it was natural that many Texans had doubts about Cruz’s success in this election. Cruz also created an image of Beto as a extreme liberal who was anti-police, for taxation, would pick sides with an illegal immigrant over an american citizen, and who was more liberal than Bernie Sanders.
Cruz did his best to destroy Beto’s reputation in the Texan republican eye. The article also talks about Cruz’s indecisiveness with regard to supporting president Trump. After losing to Trump in the presidential elections at first Cruz did not support him. But, after Trump had openly mocked his wife and father, Cruz embraced him as he would a friend. This indecisiveness with the president switched many republican votes to Beto’s campaign. Clearly not enough to win the election because most republicans still viewed Beto as too far left. Although nothing was changed in terms of Texas’ democratic representation in the senate, Democrats saw the new voter turnout level as a success. Beto attracted many people who usually would not vote and made progress for his party in years to come.
Former mayor of San Antonio, Julian Castro, said that “There is certainly light at the end of the tunnel for Texas Democrats.” The tactic which seemed most effective for Ted Cruz was warning Texas about the loss of culture and identity that would come with Beto in office. “Don’t California our Texas” a woman told Cruz at one of his rallies. This article gives a fairly unbiased perspective and covers both republican and democratic views on Cruz’s success in running for senate against Beto. Although many articles choose to be completely unbiased and strictly factual, The Times has a series of Opinion papers which are always clearly from one side of the map. There is an article called Cruz might win the Senate, but the Democrats are Winning Texas written by democrat journalist Richard Parker. This article, unlike the articles written by Manny Fernandez, is clearly against Ted Cruz and the image he paints of Texas.
The image of a pick-up truck driving, strictly Christian, gun carrying state. It speaks about the true colors of Texas. Mr. Parker tells us that Texas is the state with the highest muslim population and is increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. Beto’s hometown of El Paso is mainly Latino and democrat. When Cruz visited he attracted a crowd of merely 2,000 people. This article states that the number of Texans who identify as republican is quickly decreasing. Now, more Texans are considering themselves to be “Progressive” rather than Democrat or Republican. Richard Parker describes Ted Cruz’s campaign as a circus act that is not the true representation and embodiment of Texas. Texas is much more than this and has vibrant colors and unique cities with people from all cultures.
With Ted Cruz now once again in the senate most likely we will see him vouch for tax cuts and maintaining gun rights. The NRA will definitely continue to endorse him and he will do what he can to make sure that Texans are not stripped of their second amendment. In addition, Ted Cruz, being extremely pro-life, will most likely try to make abortions difficult to receive in the state of Texas and attempt to get Planned Parenthood out of his state. He will also side with the president and ensure that illegal immigration is controlled and most likely vote to put an end to birthright citizenship. Through studying Cruz’s victory I have learned a lot about the republican point of view on different matters. I have also learned about Texas as a state. I previously viewed Texas as one of the least democratic state which would never even get close to having a democrat in office. But, I have now learned that there are all sorts of cities in Texas. Texas is a diverse place with many different cultures and it is becoming bluer and bluer by the day.
