An Analysis of the Differences between the Older and Newer Generation

The older generations, like our parents and grandparents think very differently than our generation. The reasons that we have such differences is very complicated, it includes culture, social development, social value, and more. However, between our generation and the older generations the generation gap does exist, due to the examples of parenting style and educational focus, the generation gap has become a wall that blocks interaction of a family.

The older generation and newer generation, their living style, parenting style, experiences of generation gap, religious, educational style, and mode of thinking are different, and all of these differences cause the generation gap.

As time goes by, each generation has their own mode of thinking, behavior, and attitude.

The life style for older generation was very different. In the past, they relied on agriculture and manufacturing more while we rely on technology and industry. Ways of communication vary by technology improvements; older generations use mail, and telephone to connect with each other; however, due to the invention of cell phone, computer, Internet, and social network, we have advanced methods for communication.

For entertainment, they tend to have more regular living style because their daily routine is limited by the types of entertainment they have; on the contrary, we can watch movies, drink and dancing in nightclubs, play computer games, or more. For transportation, our grandparents and parents chose vehicles or ships to get to their destination, but that takes lots of time; we have various choices for traveling now. We can take airplane, high-speed railroads, or drive our cars on the highway and arrive at any destination in a short time.

Children gain more freedom because the parenting style has been changed by the development of mind in this new generation of the society. For older generations, parents seems to be the main character in the family, children have to obey the rules. For example, in the past children had less freedom of opinion for marriage; their family decided children’s marriages. They had no chance to marry to the person that was right for them. The freedom of divorce in the past was also forbidden, the decision had to made by their parents before they done anything they want. Compare to these days, we have more freedom to be in charge of the decisions we make; we can marry to the one we love or end up with an unhappy relationship.

The experiences of generation gap contains in both old and new generation. The older generation, like our parents, they must face the older generation like our grandparents and that is the experiencing when our parents thinking of generation gap.

Occasionally, our parents were like us, they didn’t like the way in which their parents taught. So our parents had same idea of generation gap in our own time. Compare to our generation, sometimes we do things depends on parents that is the similarity way in both experiences. Unlike our parent’s experience, our parents are more open- minded because they base on the thinking also adding their parent’s thoughts.

The traditional religious is one of the point that create a generation gap between a family with old and new generation members, the significant of sex have been changed dramatically due to the culture influence. In the past, the older generation used to consider sex as a serious assignment after a marriage, because of the religious taught to do so, the rules of having sex with a person was not allow from the rules of traditional religious. As time goes by, the rules of religious are still committing by people who is really into a religions, like older generation.

For now, even though new generation are having same commitment as the older generations, but the new generation had become more self-awareness for the freedom of sex before marriage. The new generation has the different opinions about sex; they could consider the rules of religious, as the second choice of their life, the newer generation does not totally obey by the religious. Religious have base on the rules, also the educational style, they both have deeply influenced by the older generation.

The new generation has educated school as their second home, because the length of time they stay at school can equal to the time they stay at home. Whether the new generation has many chance to broaden their knowledge or not, their time, class schedule, social activities, and behavior have controlled by school. Although there are more chance to get better education in these day but still there are many new generation think school is like a jail for them when they have almost take plenty of tests in each day.

Compare to the older generation, it is fair to the older generation to have more freedom to learn more and have the chance to close to the nature. They have not much pressure because they have fewer competitors to race with, so that the old generation has more chance to broaden the ability they have. However, the new generation has their idea of focusing on their school performance more, and that’s the point of generation gap. The older generation may thing the education isn’t the most important thing for entering an higher level in the society, in the opposite way, the new generation consider the higher education they get the better job they will get reward.
