A Review of the Different Genres of Music in One Concert

When I first found out that the only concert I could attend before the report deadline was on Monday, October 3″, I was unsure of what to expect. I saw the word ensemble, and thought it would be similar to a traditional concert—but I couldn’t have been more wrong, The “Musicircus“ that was performed was completely opposite to what I prepared myself for. It was basically many musicians coming together to simultaneously play their music. This included jazz, folk, classical and various other solos and duets from different genres.

There were many interesting aspects of this “happening,” but I definitely enjoyed this experience because it forced me to focus when listening to each musical performance. Despite all the unconventional aspects of this performance, I was able to isolate certain musical performances and focus on their tempo, dynamics and how they evoked different emotions in me.

I was especially drawn to the jazz band that played on this night. It consisted of one drum set, one guitar, one bass, and one electric mandolin.

Though I have always been fond of this style of music, it was interesting to me how the sound of their band reached my ears so much more clearly than the other instruments playing. As the Musicircus began, I listened to all the sounds as a whole and it sounded chaotic and messy. However, I noticed that my head was bobbing to a rhythm being played by the jazz band, Though it took me some time to mentally drown out the other music and focus on the band, it was an amazing experience when I did.

The music they played was definitely consonant for the majority of the time, making everything sound smooth and relaxing. The melody was played by the electric guitar and the bass and electric mandolin played the harmony.

I felt like the tempo was andante because everything was played at a very relaxing pace and it definitely evoked a mellow feeling in me. The image I thought of when listening to the jazz section was a man lying down on a cloud floating down a stream of crystal clear water. The next musical section focused on was the man playing his piccolo folk music. I liked this piece in particular because it seemed to be the most fitting for the “circus” occasion in comparison to the rest of the music played. When I concentrated on that in particular its lively tone and Vivace tempo immediately brought me out of my mellow state into excitement. In this case, the range was wide but I still felt that it was mostly consonant Ijust imagined a typical movie scene where everyone breaks out into dancing and fun. It evoked so much energy in me that I had to get up and expend some energy.

Some of the string players had put down their instruments and started playing catch with a rubber ball so I joined them. Afterl played, I reflected and returned to my notepad where I realized the complete jump my emotions went through just from music. Just a moment before I focused on the folk excitement, I was extremely mellow and laid back. Simply through music, I was filled with energy and coerced into expending energy. The final musical piece that I was moved by was the piano playing accompanied by the tap dancing man and the ball bouncing man. This was my favorite piece of music because of the unique rhythm produced by the bouncing ball and the tap dancing. At first, [heard a piano piece that sounded very familiar to me.

There were many consonant sounds and it was played at what I perceived to be an allegro tempo. There were many short staccato notes and the tone color seemed to be very jumpy and anxious What made it an awesome piece was how the three seemingly different noises came together to make something amazing. At first, I thought it was going to be chaotic like the beginning of the musicircus, but at this point, the rest of the musicians were doing things in the lobby and the pianist, the tap dancer, and the ball bouncer were the only ones on stage The steady beat of the bouncing ball and the continuous piano playing, when combined with the tap dancing was simply wonderful to listen to.

Overall, [was able to take so much from my experience at this New Music Ensemble. I learned to appreciate music as a whole and individually as well. I thought that it applied to me very well because I was having trouble focusing on each part of the song in class like the melody or the harmony but the concert helped me to distinguish separate parts and also to focus and pick out noises and classify them with tone, dynamics, and dissonance/consonancei I honestly feel very grateful that I was able to attend this performance before any other concerts because I feel like it laid a good foundation for me as a beginning listener, I also loved the uniqueness and carnival feel I got from the overall production and it was honestly the first concert I have ever gone to where I was genuinely entertained throughout the entire act. I am excited to put what I’ve learned to use in my concerts to come.
