On a groggy drunken weekday, the clicking of keyboard buttons and pencil tapping flow from my roommate‘s fingers, The small, abrasive noises from him doing homework woke me from my post-noon slumbering. I examined, with eyes half open, the room for any damages and mess. I am shocked back to life when Anthony calls my name. “Justin!” he says lightly, but abrasive like that pencil tapping. “If you are looking for your bottle opener, it’s in the trash. You told me insistently last night that I need to throw it away, and that you‘re going to quit drinking” Anthony usually conforms to what you want, but never forgets what you need.
He’s a good friend to have around. People usually claim to be either left brained or right brained, either analytical or artistic. Anthony Pepe proves that we don’t just use half of our talents. As a mechanical engineering student, he spends his days passionately working on his math and physics homework, “My grandfather was a physics professor,” Anthony tells me.
He attributes some of his interest for engineering to his grandfather, and he learned at an early age his knack for figuring out how things work and determining patterns. He thinks complex math problems are fun, “I also like to draw and l have to do that for most of my work,” he showed me some detailed drawings he sketched for a class I did not understand. When he isn’t enjoying his thermodynamics homework, Anthony can be found in front of a large TV.
He religiously watches dramatic television shows and movies with an unmatchable passion. Like a human IMDB, Anthony can tell you the names of almost every actor or actress that appears on-screen and what other films they’ve appeared in. He also points out with sniper-like precision when inconsistencies happen between scenes or frames.
“The shadows in the scene disappeared because they took too long to get the scene right,” he continues on explaining to me about the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. “Physics is everywhere,“ he says, “even in the movies”, When he was still in high school, Anthony wanted to be a film editor and fix inconsistencies in movies, His favorite movie is Fargo. His passion for films came from his parents. Like himself, Anthony tells me his parents can name all the actors and actresses in every movie he’s ever seen, dating back to the 60’s. Anthony‘s father is Argentinian, and his mother is Japanese. He embraces his rich cultural background. Anthony occasionally brews yerba mate, a strong South American tea, in a hollowed out coconut.
He tells me all about the different South American dishes and where to try them Japanese culture is also a huge part of his life Anthony is close to his Japanese grandmother, who sends him gifts from Japan, On his shoulder and arm, intricate tattoos mix and weave into each other. “The biggest decision of my life was to get these tattoos,“ he says. Anthony has the kanji symbols of his family name tattooed on the back of his right arm. The symbols resemble the brushstrokes from a skilled calligrapher. His shoulder is covered with a soft, black and grey piece of a koi fish with traditional Japanese, cloud background textures. Koi fish are believed to bring good luck. Like with anything, he took great care in picking the right artist to do his tattoos. Anthony returns to his homework without a sign of discontent. He hunches over his paper, quietly sketching out three dimensional shapes, and plugging equations into his graphing calculator. His world seems to be whatever is on his desk, and he’s eagerly trying to make sense of it.
