A Description of "Romeo and Juliet" By William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare‘s ”Romeo and Juliet”, is a romantic tale about a young man and woman who continue to be in love with each other, knowing the fact that their families are warring rivals. This loving play depicts love at first sight and shows how powerful love can be. However, I believe that Romeo and Juliet’s ”love” is just a teenage infatuation because the couple constantly admires the other’s looks, make serious decisions too quickly, and question their love for the other.

One reason that I believe that Romeo and Juliet were not truly in love and more of a teenage infatuation because the young lovers constantly admires each other‘s beauty and nothing else. For example, Romeo states about Juliet’s beauty when he meets her by the wall of the Capulet’s orchard. “O that she knew she were! She speaks, yet she says nothing. What of that Her eye discourses; lwill answer it. I am too bold; ‘tis not to me she speaks] Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes To twinkle in their spheres till they return.

What if her eyes were there, they in her head?

The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars As daylight cloth a lamp; her eyes in heaven”. Romeo can not get enough of looking at his love, Juliet, he continues to compliment Juliet to himself while he stares at her. Another example is when Juliet admires Romeo’s beauty during their plans to marry near the orchard wall.

Another reason why Romeo and Juliet are just teenagers who are infatuated with one another is because they are moving things too quickly. During the scene where Romeo and Juliet pronounce each other’s love for the other, they decide to marry each other to make it official. However, it has only been two days since they have met. ”Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed./ If that thy bent of love be honorable,/ Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow,/ By one that I’ll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite; And all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay/ And follow thee my lord throughout the world”. This is a teenage infatuation because teenagers most often than not tend to take things too fast. They would buy each other expensive gifts and always “promise” their love for one another. Romeo and Juliet have taken things too fast by getting married with one another just a few days after meeting each other.

Finally, Romeo and Juliet are just another teenage infatuated couple because the young lovers question their love for each other. For example, during the scene near the orchard, Juliet questions whether she truly loves Romeo and whether he truly loves her. “I come, anon.–But if thou meanst not well,l I do beseech thee-l….By-and-by l come.–/To cease thy suit and leave me to my grief./ Tomorrow will I send”. Another example is when Juliet tries to convince herself that name is meaningless and that it has nothing to do with someone. ”Belonging to a man. 0, be some other name!/ What’s in a name? That which we call as a rose/ By an other name would smell as sweet./ 80 Romeo would, were he not Romeo called,l Retain that dear perfection which he owes”. This shows that Juliet is trying to convince herself that she should have no problem loving Romeo when her mind is telling her that something is wrong with loving him and that something might happen later on.

If Romeo and Juliet were truly in love with each other, Juliet would not have to question whether she should send a messenger to him or whether she truly loves Romeo. With a true loving couple, most would not have to question their love for another and could easily say that they love their significant other. In conclusion, the play, ”Romeo and Juliet”, written by William Shakespeare is about a teenage infatuation instead of true love because the young lovers constantly admire their beauty and looks instead of their other features and personalities. take things too quickly in their relationship by marrying, and because they question their love for one another. With the teenage infatuation shown in “Romeo and Juliet”, young readers can understand what a teenage infatuation is and how to determine if they are truly in love.
