World War One began on 28 July 1914 and ended 11 November 1918. Also known as the First World War, the war was fought by two opposing sides called the Allies and Triple Alliance. To name a few, on the Allies side were the Russian Empire, France, United Kingdom, and Italy while Germany and Austria-Hungary were on the Triple Alliance. The war began on the 28th of July in 1914 when the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated. The result of his death led to Austria-Hungary giving Serbia an ultimatum which led to them declaring war on them.
After this happened, Russia started preparing for war and Germany demanded that they demobilize which Russia refused. However, in 1917 the Russian government failed, and a revolution broke out among the people, forcing Russia to step out of the war. Before the end of the war, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire were barely alive anymore.
Their resources had run out while the Allies’ had the United States vast resources helping them stay alive.
The Allies saw the weakness and instead of destroying Germany, they set up an Armistice. As part of the Armistice, Germany had to give up some of its colonies to the Allies and pay a tax to France. Because of the First World War, so many people died on both sides. Along with that, machinery was also being invented and being used for the first time. Many dangerous new age items that many had never used before. Not only that, a lot of the countries went into a depression because of the effect the war had on them.
Perhaps this is why World War One matters more to Europeans, because it almost crippled their whole continent. While America entered the war later and had more access for resources and technology.
