Women in Poverty

The social and economic climate of the world is set, maintained, and built for men by men. (Good opening statement) Women in many regions are not seen as equals to men—they have many societal pressures infringed upon them. With more opportunities given to males, they have better chances of living better and more successful lives. Not only do men and women experience poverty differently, but women across regions also experience poverty very differently. The differences can be seen between developed and developing regions.

Women in developed nations have more of a fighting chance of finding some source of work, whereas in developing nations the options permitted to girls are limited. These differences in opportunities are even more drastic because men are often seen as the life source of the family, girls are not given the same chances as their brothers might be offered, and women and young girls are more likely to be trafficked or sold into some form of slavery.

(This sentence has good ideas but is too long. Break up to be more concise.)

In developing and developed regions alike, many people still follow the beliefs that men should provide for the family and women should maintain the household. This stigma has been discounted and women are very influential aspects of the workforce in more developed and first world countries. The same cannot be said for developing regions. Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia are just two of many developing regions where this stigma may still be found. In many nations, if not all, it is easier for a man in need to find a job for the simple fact that he is a man.

This fact just fuels the stigma and reasons behind trying to better the son’s education in hopes that in return he will be better equipped to provide for his family.

It is also not surprising that in many placates (delete apostrophe) children do not go to school because they are expected to contribute to the family income. In homes that have more than one child of working age, the boy will be sent to school. Even with studies showing that generally, girls that are out into school have a higher success rate, they do not get the chance to get the education that could better their status in life. More developed nations have come up with many ways to ensure that every child goes to at least primary school. This makes it harder for a woman to find a well-paying job once they are of age. Beyond this in the working class, men have a higher pay rate than women, this difference in wages decreases the minimum wage the job becomes. This is also a world where the highly educated make the most money and those seeking a higher education do not have the funds to achieve one.

A very underrepresented number of young girls and women are trafficked across the world. Even more, are sold within their country’s borders. This is a common thing in many developing regions, especially in more “sexually conservative” nations. Girls looking for good honest work are tricked and become trafficked into the sex-slave trade. The girls are uneducated, young, and naive. This is so common that in many areas’ society will turn a blind eye to the atrocities that happen around them to these women and many times very young girls. This tends to happen because their mothers are uneducated as well which just continues the cycle.

If we decreased the gap between genders by not putting the weight of having to return to care for the family on boys, gave girls the same opportunities as their brothers, and educated women more so they are better equipped to enter the workforce; then the gap between developed and developing regions would also decrease. Many efforts around the world are being made to stop modern-day slavery, to get more children—especially girls—into school, and to get better health and education provided to those in poverty. This effort can be helped by getting more people in developed regions aware of the situations that persist not only overseas but also in towns not far from their own.
