Nationalism and patriotism typically get confused or people think that they are the same thing. Patriotism is where people are devoted to a particular place and way of life and typically believe that this is the best place/ way of living in the world but don’t wish to force these beliefs on others. Whereas nationalism is where nationalists continue to strive for more power and prestige. The nationalists aren’t just doing it for themselves, they are also doing it for their nation as well.

Nationalism has been used to define radical political and militaristic movements. Some example of well-known extreme forms of nationalism include genocide and the Holocaust.  Nationalism is typically driven by cultural associations like a country’s culture, language, race, sports, literature, or the arts.

Nationalism typically also has dislikes for other countries and even citizens that don’t have the same beliefs as the nationalists. Historically, nationalism used politics, the economy, and the nations culture to promote the wellbeing and superiority of a given nation over all the other nations.

Nationalism continues to remain prominent throughout the whole world. There have been multiple ways that we have tried to get rid of nationalism, but every way we try hasn’t been successful. Whenever capitalism has had a crisis, the nations sates come out to their rescue. President Trump’s campaign “America First” has been continually compared to new nationalism. He once said, “From this day forward, it is going to be America First” this made many people wonder if he was a nationalist because it sounded like he had a nationalism view.

We see more and more politicians who base their campaign on the fact that they are standing up for their own country. This has caused issues and tensions with trade, economy and climate. We are continuing to see how America has a more nationalism perspective from things such as “love America, bomb Iraq” or “America: love it or leave it”. These things are showing us that America has a nationalism perspective because they don’t really care that much about other countries, just our own. Americas issues with nationalism is very dangerous. It may lead to many more issues with other countries. A majority of the resources that America has are actually important and we need to make sure that we have good relationships with these other countries. Many people are also “blind” to this nationalism because they believe that we live in a patriotism society when in reality we have nationalism as well. Americans need to keep their eyes open for nationalism.
