Picking a topic to do my research paper on is very tricky, As much as I love the writing practicum topics I find it hard to invest myself in the wide selection it has to offer. For a while now I have been into ‘The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator’, also known as MBTI or personality type tests. These tests use people’s results to indicate how they perceive the world and make decisions So with that in mind I think I would like to focus my research project on finding out what others feel about the MBTI test since it really interests me.
This research is important to me because it helped me understand who I am As cliche’ as it sounds I always had a hard time describing who I am, whatl like and dislike, and the test helped me realize a few things about myself I feel like personality tests are a fun way of getting to know yourself but shouldn‘tjustify you.
For some people, such as my boyfriend, they don’t really like these tests because they don’t want to just be their MBTI typet.
Some may feel like they are just boxed in that category, don‘t want it to justify who they are, or feel like these tests are nonsense, But for me MBTI connects to my life because it gives me those “gentle nudges“ that help me understand who I am, my interests, and personality but like I said earlier, I don’t want it to define me, I feel like astrology, horoscopes, palm readings, zodiacs, and things like that are fun but for me, they don‘t really have a purpose.
Some may love checking their horoscope and I admit that I like doing that too, but they don’t really help me other than saying some fun tidbits that can relate to my life, I feel like MBTI matters because it helps some people understand themselves a little bit better or even a lot, Hopefully these test do not cause them to settle saying something along the lines of, “this is just who I am,” but more of a “hey, I’m learning about myself.”
I think that most times we may feel like we are alone or weird, that there is no one out there similar to us, but when you take a test and learn your type you can delve into a world that helps you explore how others are as well as yourself. The test results or MBTI type should not define you as a person and should not be used to assess important aspects in your life, Things such as choosing careers, partners, and financial matters all that stuff should not tie in with what the results say or tell you to do, I feel that the test promotes understanding in self, which for us college students is something we are going through. Getting to know what other people think of this test would help me learn what their opinions are, if it helps them, if it doesn’t, or if they just don’t care, With that information I will be able to hopefully get a general understanding of how others feel on this issue along with other details that tie in with MBTI, Communication is a key part of the MBTI test since it poses a field of questions related to it, I personally feel that this research connects to this field of study since it can show how others feel when communicating with others, how introverted or extroverted they are, observant or intuitive, and other topics in the test.
The most important part of this research would have to be the questions that the MBTI/personality test provider At the start of the research I would have to ask if the participant would be interested in taking the test (which can take a while), what their opinion is on the test, and if they are open to sharing their results with me. In order to collect my data I would probably stick to more of the qualitative side of research rather than quantitative, Since I will be dealing with exploring and understanding meaning more than numerical data or testing, I’d say I would be using qualitative measures such as interviews and observation, but with a mix quantitative ones, such as surveys, as well, Nonprobability sampling will occur since it is easier and quick, These methods will help me understand what others think of the MBTI test and give me enough data to make those correlations.
