The main aim of this essay is to compare the leadership style of the current Polish president Mr. Andrzej Duda and the current Zimbabwe president Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa. The main focus is on the differences and similarities of their leadership styles from the cultural point of view also considering this time of a pandemic outbreak and how they are responding to it.
For political leaders to exist and function properly they need to gain favour and support from their people that is paramount in reference to democratic states.
Effective leaders normally possess characteristics such as strong communication; being able to convey a clear message to their people, passion and commitment, humility; acknowledging of their mistakes and making room for other people’s opinions. My research conducted in Poland and Zimbabwe shows that voters prefer to vote for parties led by democratic, coaching or authoritative leaders in contrast to coercive ones. Although preferences for political leadership styles are quite similar for Polish and Zimbabweans, their perception of the leadership styles is different.
This essay has some new insights in cross-cultural studies on leadership, and might be applicable for political image makers and politicians. The following are the similarities and differences of the leadership styles used by both President Emmerson and President Duda in governance.
Democratic leadership – This is also referred to as participative leadership, president Emmerson Mnangagwa and Andrzej Duda practise this type of leadership. Even though they are the ones in authority they work hand in hand with the parliament which takes part in decision making when it comes to vital matters of the states.
The input from the members of parliament who are representatives of the citizens is highly valued. The presidents collaborate with the members of parliament when it comes to decision making and meetings are held to discuss their contributions. This is the best approach to leadership because it encourages unity towards one goal to achieve good for their countries. However, constantly trying to achieve consensus among the members of parliament and citizens as a whole is not an easy task as they will always be opposition parties.
Laissez-Faire leadership – Laissez-faire leaders delegate tasks to their subordinates whilst providing the necessary tools and resources for the tasks to be carried out; this is the main task of presidents in my opinion. Currently both presidents Mnangagwa and Andrzej Duda are working together with their ministers of health to make sure of the safety of their citizens during the fight against COVID 19. The president of Poland made an alliance with Trump in order to get assistance during the pandemic. According to an article by the US embassy and consulate in Poland, “the two leaders agreed to work closely together, including with the EU, to defeat the virus and stimulate the global economy”. President Emmerson Mnangagwa also proceeded to partner with China for assistance in the same situation. The Chinese government sent some medical experts to Zimbabwe to help equip them with the necessary medical skills to treat corona virus patients. This explains how both presidents are laissez faire leaders they provide their subordinates with all necessary resources for them to carry out their duties whilst they monitor from a distance. This leadership approach builds the level of trust and independence it is empowering for teams that are creative and self-motivated. The downside to it is that if the ministers have different motives to those of the president it may lead to chaos and confusion due to clash of ideas.
Charismatic leadership – Charismatic leaders have magnetic personalities, as well as a lot of conviction to achieve their objectives. Rather than encouraging behaviors through strict instructions, these leaders use eloquent communication and persuasion to unite a team around a cause. They’re able to clearly lay out their vision and get others excited about that same goal. President Andrzej Dude is a charismatic leader according to the 2015 presidential elections he won with 51,1% of votes. This shows that his campaigns were a success as he was able to convince the majority to vote for him. Charismatic leaders are able to clearly show their vision and gain influence of a crowd making them get excited about the same goal. On the other hand, president Emmerson Mnangagwa seems to be lacking in this skill judging from how he gained power which was done forcefully to the dismay of the majority.
One major difference between these two presidents is their dress code which is influenced by their cultural differences. This is not only between the Polish and the Zimbabwean president but the difference can be witnessed when we take a closer look at all African leaders in comparison with European ones. As an African leader one is expected to put on the national colours wherever they go as they are a representative of the nation. President Andrez Duda is always dressed formally in a suit for almost every occasion that he takes part in. For example, even when he took part in the youth meeting in Lednica we see him dancing in his suit. On the other hand, President Emmerson Mnangagwa can dress up in any style but he makes sure that it represents the national colours. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is well known for his scarf with Zimbabwean flag colours that he normally puts on. The scarf is a symbol of his country as it contains their flag colours, he does this as a way to show how proud he is of his country. Citizens of Zimbabwe have adopted this culture and for all national gatherings they dress up in national colours mimicking their president. This shows that Emmerson is a pacesetting leader he exemplified to his people how to be proud representatives of their nation through his dress code which they later adopted.
In conclusion, these two countries seem to possess almost the same leadership styles as mentioned above hence they all use presidential and parliamentary members to govern their countries. Even though these leaders also have different approaches to tackling some issues they are doing this effectively.
