A factor that may affect the acceptance of help, could be that the client does not see his temperament as problematic. His perspective is not consistent with that of Sheena, who referred him for his gloomy disposition. A problem that the client would like to work on is his communication skills. Client desires to work on vocalizing his thoughts and feelings. His father may be advantageous to the helping process because he encourages Mason with taking steps to support himself. “Client recalls his father saying “You are responsible for you, don’t hand over the controls to your self-esteem.
” A contributing factor to the client’s outlook on life, is his recollection of his life experiences. Client has observed his mother go through the lengthy process to obtain an advanced degree and he feels as if it may not be worth the effort. Client recalls his mother crying and saying “I thought there would be more.” Mom’s choice in men could also be a contributor to Mason’s outlook on life.
Client referenced his mom’s past relationships as a “parade of drunken assholes.”
The client appears to have a supportive family system. This may positively affect the intervention process because with guidance, they may be able to gain an understanding of how the family functions as a unit, and gain problem solving skills. Mason also has stable employment and appears to be driven toward saving money. His art work is another strength within his environment. The client’s passion for art can be possibly integrated into the intervention process by utilizing art therapy.
Mason is also seeking to make sense of the world around him. Client recalls asking his father what is the point of everything that goes on in life. Masons seems to possess the strengths of perseverance and curiosity because he is actively pursuing goal attainment and gaining understanding. A weakness that exists in the client system could be Mason’s cynical outlook on others.

A goal to work toward would be building rapport and improving communication among the client and others in his environmental system. When asked about his expectations for college, client states “I’m not counting on it being some big transformative experience.” He reflected on his mom’s life, and said “I mean, look at my mom. She got her degree, and got a pretty good job, she can pay her bills. Grandma was instrumental in helping the client’s mom get settled in Houston, and she picked the client up after school during childhood. A weakness in the client’s family system was experiencing his parents’ divorce during childhood. Client recalls his father leaving and he didn’t see him for about a year and a half. The client’s father came back into his life after he returned from Alaska, and regularly spent time with he and his sister. Mason also recalls Bill (mom’s second husband) having an issue with frequently drinking alcohol. He expressed that it eventually led to he and his siblings witnessing and being victims of violence in the home.
Client recalls his mom saying to his sister “It sucks! But it doesn’t suck half as much as having a drunk fool slam your head against a wall!” Strengths, Weaknesses, Patterns and Characteristics Due to his gloomy disposition, client was referred by his friend Sheena. Sheena suggests that Mason has an unorthodox perspective on things. She states “That sounds to me like just another extreme Mason view of everything.” It is unknown at this time how long Mason has fostered this gloomy disposition. One of Mason’s previous coping skills involved shutting down, and not verbalizing his feelings. Client reports “I don’t usually try to like vocalize my thoughts or feelings or anything.”One effect, is that others don’t feel as if he clearly verbalizes himself.
Client reports that during an exchange with Jim, his mom’s partner, he tells him “Stop mumbling! You know, speak up! I can’t understand a word coming out of your mouth. It’s just like, ‘uh uhh nuhh’ and I ask you questions and you just…” History of the problem Data Collection on Social History Client Mason Evans Jr. presents as an 18-year-old, male who was referred to counseling by his friend Sheena, for his gloomy temperament. “It’s actually kind of a relief not to have to be around someone who’s so gloomy all the time” Sheena states. Mason articulates “I just want to be able to do anything I want, because it makes me feel alive. As opposed to giving me the appearance of normality.”
