Eleanor vs Governess

One of the man differences between Eleanor’s arrival to Hill House in The Haunting of Hill House and the governess in The Turn of the Screw is that the governess was welcomed to Bly and Eleanor was told to leave Hill House. Bly was a beautiful welcoming home and Hill House is a gothic, supposedly haunted house. The governess was coming to help out the children of Bly and to do something productive. She was invited to the house by the owner and had no ulterior motive.

Eleanor went to Hill House for an experiment. Dr. Montague is doing an experiment to find supernatural evidence at Hill House. He secured a visit to Hill House and brought Eleanor along because of a supposed supernatural event that occurred in her past. When she got there she was told to go home by Dudley, the gatekeeper.

So she was not welcome at Hill House even though she still argued her way in.

One of the main similarities between Eleanor’s arrival at Hill House and the governess’s arrival at Bly is that they were both needed to come to the house. Eleanor was needed by Dr. Montague to be his assistant and help him study the supernatural occurrences at Hill House. She was chosen specifically because when she was young her father died. After this happened rocks starting falling on her house until one day they stopped. Both occurrences were unexplainable so they seem to be supernatural which gives Eleanor the appearance that she has experience with the supernatural.
