The Homeland Security Committee is a standing committee and a part of the House of Representatives. It holds the responsibilities of public security, roughly comparable to the home ministries in other countries. The role of this committee is to oversee and handle legislation, hold hearings and subpoena witnesses. Homeland security was established by the Home Select Committee on June 19, 2002. It was signed on November 22, 2002, by George W. Bush the president, and became a law on November 25, 2002. Members if the committee, chair Ron Johnson a Republican, Ranking Member Gary Peters, Democrat, and Subcommittee Ex Officio.

When people think of homeland security, the majority of the people think mostly of being protected, free from harm, danger and terrorist attacks and threats. The reasoning for it is exactly that, Homeland security is an American national security umbrella term for ‘the national effort to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards” where American interests, aspirations, and ways of life or the people can thrive to the national effort without harm within the United States.

There is more to what Homeland security does. The Department is broken out into a dozen high-level and very publicly recognizable departments and offices. What they do is secure and protect our open borders, uphold all immigration laws and passings, and safeguard and secure cyberspace.

Shortly after 9/11 there was a need of a change in the ways of how homeland security worked in America. The homeland security department is in control of something called Hometown Security it is a smaller department, and that is the protection and safety of neighborhoods and towns. Some risks of this committee is when threats or system shutdowns happen the nation loses trust in Homeland Security, including the decisions for when, where, and how to gain in resources that can control even having any risks. In the face of multiple and diverse catastrophic possibilities.

In 2016 the overall financial cost of the committee was $64.8 billion the departments with the largest budgets are, The U.S. Customs and Border Protection with $13.5 billion, FEMA with $13.2 billion, U.S. Coast Guard with $9.9 billion, Transportation Security Administration with $7.3billion and lastly U.S. Immigration and customs enforcement. Homeland security is on if not the largest reorganization that the U.S government has.

Homeland Security is still growing and improving and with the high demand for worker across the country, it will keep improving with greater and better ways to keep the United States safe. There still remain resolute of America’s commitment to prevent stop and disrupt terrorist attacks and destruction for the U.S Homeland, protect the American people and resources we have. Yes, there can be problems with the system or more attacks in the feature but Working together, America as one will secure Homeland Security in order to sustain our way of life currently and for generations to come.
