World War 1 was one ofthe most brutal and tragic wars in the early 1900s which caused a lot of pain and suffering for man. this war occurred in 1914-1918. This war was between European allies.. Both sides were fighting for land. This war had many reasons for occurrence. Militarism, Alliance Systems, and Nationalism were the main causes of World War 1. Militarism helps sides gain more weapons to guide soldiers in the war.
Alliance Systems helped sides advance in armaments.
Nationalism gave soldiers encouragement from back home and throughout the war because they had much pride. The underlying causes of World War 1 was competition due to advantages and support.
Militarism helped sides advance in different types of weaponry and technology. “Germany has suddenly announced their determination to increase her already monstrous armaments by a special and additional expenditure of fifty million pounds” (doc.9). Germany is intending to increase their power by spending fifty million pounds to get there.
This portrays their attempt to boost their chances of success by a lot because they are putting a lot of money out just to test it. “Germany is and Austria-Hungary 1.2 million” (doc.7). Germany is basically just showing off how awesome and amazing their army is and trying of scare the French. Austria Hungary is trying to increase the number of armaments they will have in the war. This chart portrays the number of navy Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy spent in millions every ten years from 1890-1914. Germany is using money to advance in the war.
Alliance systems guided sides with more armaments and money. The Triple alliance surrounded The Triple Entente (doc3). Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy were connected countries which made it easier for them to send in reinforcements or to meet and discuss war strategies. This map reveals the countries that were neutral and against each other. The Triple Alliance was surrounding France to scare them a bit. All countries were pointing at Germany (doc 4). Every country involved in the war blames Germany for the break of peace except for Austria-Hungary which points at Serbia, their worst enemy, and Italy that just decides to stay out of it. This picture depicts the peace of Europe being broken with all countries blaming Germany, the actual source of the problem. Once the Archduke of Austria-Hungary was assassinated, everything takes a wrong turn. both sides had backup. More numbers meant more success. Nationalism gave soldiers hope and encouragement to fight the war. “Our whole race
must stand together to halt the onslaught of these aliens from the north” (doc.6). The only way to defeat Austria-Hungary was to work together and fight hard. This article indicated that war is a team effort and needs to fought wholeheartedly in order to win. “We realize that without power, without a strong army, and a strong navy, there can be no welfare for us” (doc.8). This article uses nationalism to glorify the nations military and power. Fighting requires military strength, and without it there may be no hope of improvement or success in the future. soldiers had lots of pride for their countries and worked harder to fight knowing they had many supporters back home encouraging them to succeed and make them proud.
In conclusion, the underlying causes of World War 1 was Militarism, Alliance systems, and Nationalism because of money pride and support. The war was over one main and trivial thing that exploded into a big bad war. Overall, both sides worked hard to fight one another, and mostly each side relied on wearing each other out so that they could end the war faster.
