Carl Rogers was a very influential humanistic psychologist whose many books and articles have influenced the world in a positive way. Rogers’ teachings sought to empower people and let them live to their full potential. Carl Rogers had a great, influential life, created multiple theories about humans, and contributed to psychology in many positive ways.
Carl Rogers’ life was abundant and influential to many people across the world. In 1902, the great Carl R. Rogers was born in Oak Park. Illinois. “He received his B A.
from the University of Wisconsin in 1924, a M.A. from Columbia University in 1928, and his Ph.D. in psychotherapy from Columbia University in 1931. In 1940 Rogers became professor of psychology at Ohio State University where he stayed until 1945. He then transferred to the University of Chicago in 1945 where he served as the professor of psychology and the executive secretary at the Counseling Center. In 1957 he took a jpoint position in the departments of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin.
After this Rogers traveled to a variety of colleges” (Kathy Jo Hall). Rogers began to develop further as he came across the Freudian psychoanalytic of the Institute for Child Guidance as he was treating children there. He began to question the methods and procedures of the psychology used to treat the children since he gained better results from listening and letting his patient choose the rate of treatment. He wrote hundreds of books whilst explaining the theories he developed about personality.
Throughout his life, he receive a myriad of prestigious awards such as the Nicholas Murray Butler Silver Medal from Columbia, an award from the American Psychological Association, a distinguished professional psychologist award from the Division of Psychotherapy, and much more.
His life ended in 1987 where he died of a heart attack in San Diego, California.
Rogers was mainly known for his famous personality theories, which too were influential everywhere. He came up with theories about actualizing tendency, self, and self-actualizing tendency. Carl Rogers thought of man as being positive and a trustworthy individual. He thought every person had a hidden actualizing tendency which is constructional, directional, and present in everything that lives. The tendency can’t be destroyed, but yet can be held back and that every living creature tries hard to optimize its existence.
Rogers’ concept of self is described as being aware of being and functioning properly by interacting with others. Rogers says that self-actualization tendency is when all basic and mental needs are met, a certain development of psychology occurs. It’s also “the actualization of that part of experience which is symbolized in the self” (James). Carl’s theories created a great impact on psychology, in which he got rewarded with multiple prestigious awards.
Furthermore, these impacts on psychology were important to the study of psychology in a myriad of ways. Rogers unveiled therapy by focusing on the client and emphasized on honesty and the horrible consequences of manipulation. He pretty much gave way to break old traditions of psychology which created new interests in specific groups of people.
Rogers focused on client-centered psychotherapy which said “each client has within him or herself the vast resources for self-understanding, for altering his or her self-concept, attitudes, and self-directed behavior—and that these resources can be tapped by providing a definable climate of facilitative attitudes” (Rogers). His many theories helped with fields of education, counseling, psychotherapy, peace, and conflict resolution.
Carl Rogers affected multiple fields of psychology in positive ways with this theories of finding the client’s full potential and releasing it. Throughout Rogers’ life, he demonstrated his theories through his acts of good psychology work. You can see how Rogers showed compassion and democratic ideas through his works as a writer, therapist, and teacher.
